Maybe add a crafting recipe to where 2 logs of the same type connect at a diagonal so they could be used on corners?

Good idea. I'd add a chisel to the recipe, just because.

That said, I no longer use wood as a building material. Lightning fires are no joke, and it seems there's always something that I didn't get covered by lightning rods.

I usually make a stone roof so I can use wood wherever I see fit also you can just do 2 lightning rods to cover your base.
