Bottomless Hole Behind My House

where we randomly decided to build our house there happens to be a pretty deep chasm which was later useful for ore but the main cavern is absolutely teaming with monsters. We walled it off

 

Can we wipe them out so that we don't have to hear them shuffling around or will they keep respawning?

Try placing some kind of light sources down there, like some oil lamps, and that should limit the spawns a bit.

You might just have to fill it in with packed dirt or some other block low enough that you can't hear them anymore.
