Hi everyone, new player here! I'm still getting the hang of the game—I’ve only built a basic house out of packed dirt so far—but I’m having a blast.

While working on my base, I started wondering: how can I design it so that monsters have a really hard time attacking me?

I love the fact that you're never 100% safe, especially during storms. That feeling of tension is great. But I also think there should be ways to improve your safety through smart base design—without resorting to exploits like hiding in a 1x1 hole.

If I understand correctly, during temporal storms, enemies can spawn anywhere, even inside bases, regardless of lighting. That means no matter how well I fortify my home—whether I add layers of defense, traps, or elevated structures—drifters can still appear right next to me. In other words, strategic base-building doesn’t seem to make much difference when it comes to storm survival.

I think it would be really interesting if some enemies could slowly break through certain types of blocks. That way, how I build my base would actually matter, and after a storm, I could assess the damage and refine my defenses for the next one. It would also make sleeping during storms more immersive—imagine being jolted awake because creatures broke through your walls!

I realize this might be an unpopular opinion, and maybe I’m looking for something the game isn’t meant to offer. But for me, these changes would make Vintage Story my dream survival experience—so I figured I’d share my thoughts anyway.

And hey, as a developer, I might just have to implement it myself one day as a passion project! 😆

So take away their spawn anywhere rules and become a tower defense game? Sure, why not? Definitely should be a mod, though, because some people spend an insane amount of time chiseling, and, even if they were exempted from the despawn timer, would be a nightmare to figure out where they all went back before the next storm. For those of us who just use common stuff like regular old cobblestone, so it makes no difference how you put it back together, tower defense works out fine..

To me, the main problem is really just creatures appearing anywhere no matter the light conditions during storms.. this feels almost like the game is cheating. There is no reason to build a fortress as it is just as insecure than a small hut (maybe I'm wrong?).

Yes, it would mean that high effort chiseled blocks would need to be close to the center of your well defended home. The first line of defense would be ugly walls. You want beautiful chiseled walls? Add another "ugly" layer of defense around them xD !

Now I guess I got to start learning how to mod :P

I don't see it that way. It's just that when this weirdness happens, there are a different set of rules. The most trivial of defenses, lighting, is no longer a defense I'm fine with that.

But many are building they way they are specifically to have the beautiful facade. The ugly walls are not necessary under current game rules.

Great! I'll be watching to see what you come up with.
