Dowlgrett Posted March 29, 2025 Report Posted March 29, 2025 The underground experience in Vintage Story does an amazing job of creating a tense, almost horror-like atmosphere. The darkness, the eerie ambient sounds, and the reverb effect all work together to make caverns feel truly unsettling—just as intended. The realism is palpable, and it keeps players on edge. However, one thing breaks this immersion for me: the player’s damage sound. It plays a musical note, similar to Don’t Starve. While this works in a more stylized game, in Vintage Story’s eerie caverns, it feels out of place and even unintentionally funny. Have you also found this juxtaposition unfitting? If so, what are your thoughts on possible alternatives? Personally, I’m not too keen on changing the sound to grunts or gasps of pain. Instead, perhaps impact sounds based on the type of attack—like bites, scratches, slashes, or blunt hits—could be a better fit.
-Glue- Posted March 29, 2025 Report Posted March 29, 2025 I don't think the player sounds will ever change, since it fits into the lore and identity of the game. Though, I do agree, they can be a bit annoying. I've been jumpscared many times by my character suddenly screaming out in flute, because I was too focused on other tasks, and started to starve lol
