Hosting a private play world for my friend and I?

Would it be better to do it as a server or do it through the lan option ? I’m trying to decide as we’ve tried it through the pan option and it kicks him out every 15 to 20 minutes and we possibly have a few others joining us so build a village

I host my server in my house on a old used server. Works great for me, but you always have to deal with the pain of your router pass through.
