Grass Blocks

How come grass blocks don't turn into dirt when there is another block on top of it?

First off, same join date

Secondly, it usually does. It takes a bit sometimes, but it'll eventually update and remove the grass. I have seen it bug out a bit with sideways instability on; fallen forest floor will stay forest floor with another dirt block on it, even after a few real-life hours.

How did your grass blocks get covered? Also, are they chiseled by any chance? I know dirt can now be chiseled, but I can't remember if they can change their grass state afterwards.
