I was about to come out and say "Oh those have been in the game since I've started, they're in the south" Then I realized I'm thinking of Termites 😔

Grubs. .. Well, they come up in an inventory search on 1.20.12, but I don't remember them getting added to the game. Maybe they're a 1.20 edition, along with all the other bugs added.

Well, in the 1.20.0 dev post,

Quote

Feature: Insects! Tiny noisy particles that make the world feel more alive

  • Added jumpy noisy grasshoppers. Only spawn inside plants during warm and dry days and only in some patches. Extra noisy cricket sounds during the summer months.
  • Added very noisy cicadas to warmer areas
  • Added swarms of mating gnats above wet area lakes
  • Added uncommon coquis to jungle-type areas
  • Added Water strider on water sources
  • Added command .insectconfig [type] [on/off] to allow selective disabling of some insects

And searching throughout the rest of the post, I didn't see grubs mentioned anywhere. I also searched the main dev posts, all the way back to 1.6.0, but nothing came up.

According to this Wiki page, they have at least been in the game since 1.18.15, but the same page also lists 1.20 characters, so that's not solid evidence.

I vaguely remember them being added somewhere, but that could have been 1.14+

Grubs have been in the game for at least 5 yrs, but they are not used or spawn anywhere. They were supposed to drop from fallen logs in the forest, but those haven't been added yet either, so the only way to get them is trough the creative inventory. Tyron talked about them in one of his latest streams, and explained why they weren't in the game yet. I hope we get them one day, they are quite cute, and gnarly 😅

You can actually see the grubs in the 2022 feature trailer on the home page. They are inching along the ground in the botanical garden at around 1:54. I hope they get added soon, they look so cute and squishy.
