TrueScaredyCat Posted September 14, 2025 Report Posted September 14, 2025 Hi. I've upgraded to 1.21 recently and it feels like mobs are spawning from portals more often and they do it even during daytime. For example, I was doing construction around a house with two portals not far and I've seen new mobs spawn at 5th (9 day months) of July 9am. It's bright and shiny outside, but they keep spawning. Is it supposed to be so?

I think there were some issues with monsters not spawning when they should--ie, the conditions were right but no monsters or fewer monsters were spawning. That has been fixed, for the most part, but there have also been issues with monsters spawning when they shouldn't as well--ie, on the surface in broad daylight. Currently, that issue hasn't quite been fixed 100% yet, but it's better than what it was previously. 1

Krougal Posted September 14, 2025 Report Posted September 14, 2025 Mobs are definitely spawning during the day on the surface in 1.21.1 . Sometimes it is because of a rift, sometimes I think just because if there is enough tree cover to provide shade, but I am seeing them wandering during the day a lot. I am also having a lot more spawning in the house. I typically have 7x7 rooms with hanging oil lantern in center, technically the corners are dark enough for spawns, but it has always been very rare for me. Now it is near constant.
Echo Weaver Posted September 14, 2025 Report Posted September 14, 2025 I was kind of cranky that the spawns were so low on 1.20, even during the night. In 1.19, a nearby rift produced a lot more monsters. I think I recall that 1.20 adjusted the light threshold to keep beasts from spawning in bases and the overall beast spawning dropped. This appears to be difficult to get quite right.
GrannyX Posted September 24, 2025 Report Posted September 24, 2025 (edited) First Hi All Unfortunately, I have been having a horrible time with the spawning during the day while the rift activity is cal and not just drifters(all types) but DEEP drifters. In the early "calm" morning(after a "calm" evening), i battle 3-4 mobs before going to feed my pigs. give them a lantern and fix up their place until little ones are born. FYI my pigs are ~2 chunks SW from where i am in the picture. I was almost home when suddenly this guy decide to fall out of the sky and attacks(not quite sure where he came from, my back was turned to him. i was harvesting my blueberries). this isn't the first time i've been attacked by a deep mob on the surface. FYI i am on 1.21.1 and i have the area around my home lit up i am thinking on starting a new save with the same seed just no drifters. IDK if I can still do Residence Archives and the story line with them off. i would hate to get there and there be no struggle except for the main boss?? Edited September 24, 2025 by GrannyX this one wasn't a deep drifter. my mistake but i have had them on the surface by my base. either way though this was on a clam day with a calm night preceding it

It depends...are you just removing drifters only via a mod, setting everything to passive or neutral, or turning off lore content entirely? If you turn off lore content, then no monsters will spawn at all, but neither will any of the story content or other lore tidbits. If you set creatures to neutral or passive, they won't attack until you attack them in the case of the former, and won't fight back at all in the case of the latter. If you're just removing drifters only via a mod, the Resonance Archive should still retain some challenge aside from the boss fight, since drifters are not the only monster that spawns there. However, the overall challenge for the Archive will be reduced since monster spawns are static for most story locations, and the Archive relies heavily on drifters as a primary threat.
GrannyX Posted September 24, 2025 Report Posted September 24, 2025 @LadyWYT thanks i'll have to think about it. because i believe that even though the seed is the same it doesn't guarantee the ore spawns, resource spawns, trader type etc.... will be the same. i have found 2 lg veins of iron. Both in which i had almost jumped down a hole, and when i turned to peek, there it was unmistakable magnetite. plus i have found a huge deposit of black coal (no fire clay....yet ). i'm hoping they can fix the spawn issue.

Dang. I've never had anything like that happen in my game. That's weird. Rather than giving up on monsters entirely, you might try this: No Surface Monsters. I'm pretty sure that would retain them for temporal storms and story locations as well as caving. 9 minutes ago, GrannyX said: no fire clay....yet Just as a note, the primary way to get fire clay as of 1.20 is to craft it with ground flint cooked in the firepit. GrannyX Posted September 24, 2025 Report Posted September 24, 2025 @Echo Weaver I know how to make fire clay it's just a joy to find it in the wilds. thanks anyways
