So you found some evocative clutter, and it's giving you smithing ideas.

Fix it with glue, bring it home and put it on your drafting table - supplied with parchment and dirty feather - and make a schematic. Right-click an anvil with the schematic to place it on the anvil, setting the recipe of the next ingot or plate placed on the anvil to that provided by the schematic, returning the schematic to the inventory (or, if full, floor nearby) as the hot item is laid on the anvil. (Alternatively, right-clicking the schematic could just add the recipe to your forging options - I don't know which approach is easier to mod.)

... and then we don't have to start with all those other recipes, either! :D

Arguably, some metalwork should go into making a good drafting table. For a recipe, I'm leaning toward hammer, chisel, saw; rod, table, rod; board, board, board. So, that's two anvil recipes that can't be gated through schematics... other recipes might be more appropriate.

And here I was going to be cheeky and post a suggestion for a crafting table. 🤣

I don't know about requiring schematics for all the tinkering, but I do think having a general purpose workbench would be a good way to reduce reliance on the player's crafting grid(for example, the player can craft simple things like tools in the grid, but need a workbench to make things like sailboat figureheads and fruitpresses). Such a bench could be used for woodworking, lapidary, technical work with Jonas parts, etc.

My digital electronics hobby is all done on a dedicated work station

While it's possible to dismantle an iPhone in the middle of the woods, I do NOT recommend doing this. Intricate mechanics like Jonas parts should require a stable table of some sorts. After all, they're more fragile than a pie crust :P
