fluffydragon Posted October 6, 2025 Report Posted October 6, 2025 I think it'd be pretty cool and maybe not game breaking if we could hitch a ride to the nearest trader, if you know them by a trader, since they wander, supposable. Kind of like in Skyrim. It could be a dialogue choice, and you would have to choose the name of the trader you want to go to. maybe it would cost a gear or few. 1
LadyWYT Posted October 6, 2025 Report Posted October 6, 2025 (edited) Maybe if it's to a trader you've already discovered, but otherwise Skyrim-style fast traveling really doesn't track with how Vintage Story presents itself. The closest it gets is translocators, but those are unpredictable, or otherwise require you to make the actual trek to a specific location at least once(and even then, the teleport has a cooldown). Travel as a whole is supposed to be a deliberate choice on the player's part, and will require some planning. Even if it costs a few gears, it's either going to be cheap enough that the need to plan is negated(ie, fast travel is too lucrative compared to cost), or else it will be so expensive that there's no point in using the option. I think a better option would just be to have some sort of trading post item to set up at your base, that will designate a certain area for the occasional trader spawn. That way, the player will have a more convenient trade option to unlock, and the world itself will feel more like the post-apocalyptic wilderness it's supposed to be, since there won't be trader wagons scattered everywhere. Thats what I meant. sorry that wasn't very clear. I was thinking that u would have to know the traders and their name to be able to go to them and that there would be a limited distance like the next trader on the grid but u would need to have discovered and get their name as well before u could use their hitching service to and form. But your idea is also cool. i think I've seen a mod for that. 1
DUCATISLO Posted October 8, 2025 Report Posted October 8, 2025 soo like we pay the traders to maybe bring us to random gen villages not yet discovered by us? i mean ig it could work like a teleporter in some way we pay a few gears but then id also add a cooldown on it. that about it ig

I was thinking more like, "hey Yern, I like to go to Vox Nora who is right next to you but i don't want to scale that mountain between you two. Any way you could help a bro out?" Isn't there only one village anyhow? 3

There is, which is fitting given the lore, and the overall village design. According to the lore, most of humanity was wiped out, and the few that remain are gathered into small settlements that are very few and far between. That doesn't mean that more couldn't have cropped up over the years, however, if you talk to some of the denizens within the current village they will explain that expansion is very tough(monsters will massacre anyone who tries). Adding randomly generated villages across the landscape, like what the other block game has, would ruin the post-apocalyptic wilderness vibe. As for the design, it's easier to flesh things out fully, in a way that makes sense, if a location is built by hand. Nothing against random generation, but generally the pieces have to be simplified in order to make sure the random generation actually makes sense. The current village has NPCs with varying personalities and specific comments/reactions to specific things/people. A randomly generated village I would still expect to have fleshed out NPCs, but instead of having Bob the blacksmith gossip about his neighbors or give you his opinion on monsters or something, Bob is just a blacksmith there to sell you blacksmith goods and services, and that's it. 1
