Danny97 Posted October 29, 2025 Report Posted October 29, 2025 (edited) Why can't i make a simple chair to sit on? I can make a table just fine but not a chair nooooo, that's too complicated! I can make steel, forge it into tools, raise a 3 story building from the ground up out of stone, grow a garden, tame wild animals and the elements but i can't hammer 4 sticks into a stump and sit on it without having a specific color of cloth i have to put on top of it? Why? I am so very tired. Edited October 30, 2025 by Danny97 4 1
Scorpixel Posted October 29, 2025 Report Posted October 29, 2025 Can sit cross-legged on anything but that's it, would be nice to have interactable stools and chairs for sure, it's already there for sailboats so surely it's on the horizon (unless there's some code witchcraft or fear of some kind of hitbox/knockback exploit we're not aware of). 1 1

Why? I am so very tired. I admit to having similar thoughts. There are stools out-of-the-box in the game, but a chair? No - that's too hard! I went on a quick search, and of course, there are mods that address this. Eg Just Chairs. On the general topic, chairs are actually one of the toughest design challenges there are. They are often a final project for students doing courses like this, both because most of the best chairs have already been invented, but also because of the severe design constraints that are imposed. Humans come in many shapes, sizes and weights which your standard chair most accommodate. All angles are in three dimensions. All materials need to withstand sharp, odd forces and movement. There are often curves. Even though the basic premise of a chair goes back to the Ancient Egyptians (at least), what you and I might think of as a chair didn't actually become common until surprisingly late, until after the Industrial Revolution if I'm reading Wikipedia correctly, after the 1830s. Although as usual, the Renaissance kicked things off a bit. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chair So interestingly, at least VS is "historically" accurate. 53 minutes ago, Scorpixel said: Can sit cross-legged on anything but that's it, would be nice to have interactable stools and chairs for sure, it's already there for sailboats so surely it's on the horizon (unless there's some code witchcraft or fear of some kind of hitbox/knockback exploit we're not aware of). I second this! More intractable furniture. But a chair is an obvious one. It would be nice to move around sailboats also. Professor Dragon Edited October 29, 2025 by Professor Dragon
Valsalan Posted October 30, 2025 Report Posted October 30, 2025 To be fair if you go to the edge of any block or chiseled item and sit down your legs will hang over the edge. So there is nothing stopping you form just carving a chair or bench of your liking out of any combination of blocks and just sitting on it like so: 4 1 2

You . . . you can do that? ! ? <Mind blown.gif> Thanks @Valsalan! (Very nice little interior, BTW.) That certainly is an option, and a great one as well. I am going to give that a try! Maybe I'll have a red cushion? Hmmm . . . Chiselling is a bit "end game" though, when all you want is a nice chair and table set to place inside your basic up-and-coming house. So I still would like to support @Danny97 in requesting that a basic chair be added to the game, rather than the stools - that are called chairs - that are currently there. Well we do have the basic chair for four boards and a piece of cloth of any color. And it isn't hard to get a chisel, pretty much as soon as you have copper you can do it. Heck, I only got iron in my second Winter, and I did most of my chiseling before that with copper and bronze. But it's always up to you. I choose to make beautiful bases so I focus my efforts on that instead of other things. Heck I've got a whole museum in my attic to the things I find in the ruins. And another in my basement for things to do with forging: 1 1

Professor Dragon Posted October 30, 2025 Report Posted October 30, 2025 That is such a nice set of rooms. You could easily have put this in the "Builds" thread. I particularly like the banister rail - although the roof is amazing, and I'm wondering just how you stacked that big book like that . . . so much inspiration here. Thanks

I didn't know we had a builds thread, I'm somewhat new to the forums. As for the large book, that's a prop item I found in a ruin and fixed up with glue to pick up. A lot of the things I have on display are like that. If you're unfamiliar with glue just Cook resin and charcoal in a pot (it will ruin the pot for cooking). It takes 3 units of glue to fully fix something up. And glue hardens after a time so you have to be quick about it. But there are a lot of things you can grab form those ruins that make for good decorations. 2

I'll give it a shot as soon as i find a place to squeeze it into my base but don't expect a work of art or anything like that, matter of fact i would like you to know that my creativity is so bad most of the things i build end up as "Cube" or "Big cube" and lastly "Big cube next to smaller cube". You know how as kids we used to draw the sun by making a half circle on the top left/right corner of the drawing? That's my level. I've been eating all of my food standing up like a savage up until now,it's time for a change. 2
Galdor_Mithr Posted October 30, 2025 Report Posted October 30, 2025 if all else fails glue an aged chair in a dungeon and pick that up 1

The statement being "Look, I'm so primitive and rugged that I hewed this out of a whole log with an axe, rather than use a saw on planks." I like it. Professor Dragon. 1
