GLaDOS_cz Posted October 30, 2025 Report Posted October 30, 2025 Lighting up my base as football stadion in order to deflect mob spawns should be more liberal, mobs should be restricted to spawn on lover light levels, this odd thing is a old mechanic taken from Minecraft and should in my opinion be adressed, its not cool looking to have light sources at every corner. As seen in below image, an oil lamp in such small space is still not enough to eliminate potential drifter eating all my jams. When placed at head level, the oil lamp has radius of two... What a shameful display 2
Teh Pizza Lady Posted October 30, 2025 Report Posted October 30, 2025 I personally like the idea of "Nowhere is safe" for Vintage Story. It means base patrols are definitely necessary and you have to check the closet for the boogeyman before you go to bed. It keeps the game exciting for me. That said... I can definitely see this as an option for those looking for a more relaxed play-through, especially newcomers to the game who are used to game mechanics in The Other Block Game (TOBG).

When I build a wall around to protect my house, I expect it to be safe, But I dont like when there is so much light all around in order to make it safe, it looks weird and makes some light sources obsolete, I like how oil lamps look and would love to use them in small places, but they are practically useless when its not your only source of light same goes for torch holders, they have radius of like 4 blocks, so if I wanted to use them in the visual way, they will be practically non-functioning, the other is extreme where is torch holder each five to six blocks, which just doesnt look good.
Teh Pizza Lady Posted October 30, 2025 Report Posted October 30, 2025 yeah that's why I agree with the suggestion, but I wouldn't like having it in my game. Hence why I suggested it be an option for those who want a more relaxed or aesthetic play-through
Alonso7 Posted October 31, 2025 Report Posted October 31, 2025 (edited) Unlike in Minecraft, the light levels at night are determined by the moon. This means that it rarely reaches level 0 (no moon). If the same mechanic as in Minecraft were implemented, no enemies would spawn on 80% of nights. But yeah I also like to build fortresses and I don't want enemies spawning out of nowere. I wouldn't know how to solve it. Edited October 31, 2025 by Alonso7
Echo Weaver Posted October 31, 2025 Report Posted October 31, 2025 I have not had the problem of enemies spawning in my base when I light it up, even with oil lamps. It might be that I've just been lucky. I'll throw in with the others who want to be able to fortify and light up a base and consider it safe.
Entaris Posted October 31, 2025 Report Posted October 31, 2025 ...you only have to get below, like, light level 7 in VS, oil lamps aren't the only option you have for illumination, and even then, they can be placed, what, 8 apart? That's one each building.

It's possible to prevent spawns within a certain radius of any sufficiently illuminated block, instead of directly reducing the light threshold. It would have a bit different side effects, but the core effect of increasing coverage of light sources is the same. 1

The game differenciates already between natural and artificial light so it won't be a problem.
