By default, the propick's node search is turned off in multiplayer. That's probably what's happened here. If you wish to set it to the vanilla search range, the vanilla search radius is 6 blocks. Edit: Just to make sure all the bases are covered, make sure that you're not playing a modified version of Wilderness Survival or Homo Sapiens, as both of those also have node search disabled, I believe.
