aleq Posted December 26, 2025 Report Posted December 26, 2025 (edited) It's kind of hard to explain how, but let me try. There is nothing special about traders (for me) just being there inside their wagons. They don't seem interesting or even alive, for that matter. And still they remove that special sense of loneliness in this game. I think it's important to feel lonely and isolated in a hard survival game like this one. Plus, it doesn't even make sense that you have to struggle so hard to survive and make a simple fire, while a trader is just THERE, doing nothing, and having "everything he needs" to survive. Another thing that is annoying, is that the game encourages you to run from trader A, to trader B, to trader C - buying and selling things, before the item list is refreshed. In my opinion, that is a really bad game mechanic that simply has an element of FOMO in it. The trip you have to make to get to one of those traders - is not an easy one. And after a few times those trips stop being fun. Also, once you learn the system - who sells and buys what, then you can basically cheese the game, selling a lot of items and getting stuff and gears, easily. It removes the challenge of getting, finding or crafting those items, yourself. So, if you know a special few tricks, you can avoid a lot of hard work to get those items, yourself. Unfortunately I don't have a specific suggestion on how to fix this. If it was for me, I would choose a Vintage Story that doesn't have any traders, at all. I prefer to get my own materials, craft my own items and don't have any weird NPCs standing in their cozy little wagons, just being there in the middle of nowhere... forever. If anyone has specific suggestions, please write them here. Edited December 26, 2025 by aleq 2 1

The good news is that traders are slated for a rework in 1.22, which should mean updated models and more interesting homes than generic wagons. What else it entails though, I'm not sure. There are also various mods that change traders that you might consider trying, and if you want to remove traders entirely there's a mod that does that too: https://mods.vintagestory.at/show/mod/37087 Do keep in mind though that if you decide to remove traders entirely, that will make completing the main story very difficult, as you'll have no maps to help you find the initial story locations. 1
