Sailboat Passenger Getting Bumped Out While Sailing

Hi all,

First of all, I'm running a dedicated multiplayer server for my wife and me to play together, which I've modded with the FotSA and Floral Zone series, Rivers, Expanded Foods, Wool & More, Tailor's Delight, Dressmakers, Canoes, Waterfall (to fix the running water when making canals), River Fish, No Monsters Really!, and all the required mods to run the above. I am also running the server on the same computer (an Alienware m17 R4) that I'm playing the game on. I recognize that this makes sorting out the issue relatively complicated. Sorry!

When she is in the passenger seat of the sailboat, she sometimes gets bumped out. It only seems to happen at full speed when the server hitches a little bit. Usually she is just dumped into the water and we can meet up at the nearest island/shore to continue sailing, but one time she was dumped several dozen blocks on land and under the dirt.

Am I right in thinking this is probably just us putting too much strain on the server that it struggles with communicating where she is while we're sailing? Or is this something else, like a known issue with the sailboat or a conflict between mods?

Welcome to the forums(and the game)!

Given what you've described here, I agree that it's most likely the server struggling a bit and causing some odd behavior as a result.

Playing on the same computer that you're running the server on will also add to the workload. In this case, you might want to either cut down on the mods a bit, or look into running the server on a separate machine.

Thank you for the quick response!

I assumed as much but don't currently have a spare computer. The game itself has relatively low system requirements, but does that actually mean that we could use a relatively bare bones computer to run the server? Or would the inverse be a better set up?

You could always try it and see if it works, but I wouldn't recommend buying a new computer just to try. If you're buying a new computer just to use as a server machine then it's probably better to get something a little beefier.

Honestly, I'd recommend cutting down the modlist to something simpler. I'm not aware of any of the listed mods causing issues, aside from Rivers, so that would be a prime one to cut. A lot of those mods though add a lot of new items or entities, which can eat system resources fairly quickly. Picking a couple of creature and flora mods and keeping the modlist vanilla+ otherwise should hopefully clear up the performance issues.

Alternatively, if the hitching and glitching only happens with the sailboat specifically, you could just keep playing as-is if you're not running into other issues, and just be extra careful when using the sailboat.

That's basically what our "workaround" solution for this world has been. It's a shame because we were really excited to explore new biomes further south together, with all the extra content from FotSA and FZ. We'll try building a second sailboat to see if the issue is the server struggling to communicate where she is while passively riding in the sailboat. If the speed of the sailboat is part of the problem, we might try using canoes and sticking to our continent for now.
