will9831 Posted February 7 Report Posted February 7 After many hours in the game, I finally completed a full set of steel plate armor. I expected to be nearly invincible, with 97% damage resistance and no uptiers, in exchange for being very slow and needing to take it off for healing. However, while I do get the full downsides, I take much more damage than I expected. For example, a nightmare drifter does 20 base damage, so I'd expect to take 20 x .03 = .6 damage from them, but I actually take about 2.5 damage per hit from them, similar to what I got from steel chain armor. I deactivated all my mods to make sure none of them were the cause and got the same results. Is steel plate armor normally disappointing, or is there something I'm missing here?

With the changes to healing, it's now possible to heal in plate armor, though the bandaging process will be rather slow. I will note that while plate armor is the best at soaking up damage, it does not make the wearer invincible. High tier enemies definitely won't hurt as much, but the attacks will still chip away at your health so you won't be able to stay in combat indefinitely. In my opinion, steel plate is ideal for defending the base during a temporal storm, or delving deep into caves. For general adventuring use, steel chain tends to be the better option of the steel tier, as it offers good protection without sacrificing too much protection or mobility.
will9831 Posted February 8 Author Report Posted February 8 Thanks. I thought before that % damage reduction would only be reduced if attack tier is higher than armor tier, but now that I read the "Technical" section of https://wiki.vintagestory.at/Armor in more detail, it looks like this isn't the case and percentage protection is reduced from any attack that isn't tier 0, with higher tier armor just having less protection reduction. I just did some testing by spawning enemies and armor in Creative which seems to confirm this.
pigfood Posted February 8 Report Posted February 8 There is a calculator linked from the wiki armor page. It comes up with 2.63 damage for a nightmare drifter against steel plate, which is line with your observation.
