So recently I've been exploring caves. Tentatively, as I only have bear hide armor and the only caves near me, that arent short dead ends, is one thats deep enough for t2-3 enemies and the other is deep enough for t4-5. And theres a whole lot of nothing in them, which maybe I am unlucky or something. (there was like 5 blocks of zinc) Now to a certain extent caves are just caves, theres no rule saying that they absolutely must be teeming with loot. However it seems that there is almost no reason to explore them, you can look for the bomb/fertilizer making material (I don't remember the name, and I also don't remember if it even gets tracked by a prospecting pick) or hope you get lucky with some ruins to pillage. But mostly its just a bunch of emptiness.

It'd be interesting if there was a resource that can only be found in caves, giving a reason to explore them. (I mean technically the unique armor sets are only able to be found in caves/story locations, but I feel its more consistent and easier to just buy it from a trader.)There are locust nests I suppose but (they seem rare, idk if they are though) you can get most of what they give you from breaking them easier elsewhere. So far the only big motivating factor to go into the caves is to farm enemies. (since I've only found a couple flax seeds, and haven't found a trader selling linen, my best way to get flax is to loot it. (also playing malefactor so that helps))

Caves are actually pretty lucrative, you just have to explore quite a few of them. The best way I've found is to go in fast and run around before too many foes spawn, and see if I can spot any ruins (typically you'll notice slightly odd cave wall generation, and then a two-wide door gap) or any ores. I don't try to be a completionist, just try to cover as much ground as I can. If there's nothing, I either try again later when the foes have disappeared, and I check any spots I didn't notice last time, of I simply go to another cave.

You can find unique loot, some of it special un-craftable and very good gear, and it's a great way to get gears, so I do think it's worth it.

Don't fight the foes if you don't have to, just run past. Prioritize a shield over armor, because it doesn't slow you down. Carry blocks and rope ladders, so you can get up spots and block off dead ends.

This video might help, although some people have questioned the narrator's motives.

World settings seem to matter a lot as well. Make sure your landform scale is at least default (100%) if not higher. I have mine set at 200% and get a decent number of ruins in caves. Once you set landform scale less than default, you'll mostly have a bunch of short empty caves with no ruins in them.

If you don't mind modding, there are several mods that make adjustments to ruins content and frequency. The mod called 'Better Ruins' has some very interesting new cave and surface POI ruin builds made by members of the community and you can find fun building blueprints in these as well.
