Can't fillet fish

I've been catching fish with a rod and stinkbait. When I place the fish on the ground, I activate my knife and hold shift to crouch but the cross hair will not turn red and it will not create fillets or bones. I've tried a few of the things mentioned on the internet like walking into the fish etc but nothing seems to be working. Any help would be appreciated.

Welcome to the game and forums! Is this issue happening in the vanilla game, or are you playing with mods? In vanilla, filleting fish works the same way as harvesting a carcass, save for the fact that you're placing the fish down yourself and the fillets are automatically deposited into your inventory rather than retrieved from a loot window.

I figured it out. I wasn't holding down the right click button long enough and the animation wasn't the same as when you are harvesting a land creature. Thank you for replying to my question so quickly, it's appreciated. Have a wonderful day
