Crafting

This is probably really simple but my young son is struggling with this and I can't see the answer other than in a way that seems wrong.

 

He presses his E key to bring up the crafting window and then wants to move an item from his hotbar to the crafting box but his cursor is locked to the game screen so it just moves his view.

The only way that I could figure to do it was to open the H window then press the E key and his cursor is unlocked from the game world to allow movement of objects from hotbar to crafting box.

There must be a more elegant solution to this that we're just not seeing.

Sounds like he might be in immersive mouse mode? (Under Esc menu/Settings/Interface) In which case, holding <alt> will free the mouse, or you can just disable immersive mode. Hope that helps!
