I have seen yesterday in a multiplayer world, that VS has wonderful particles. And my suggetsion is simple - what about fireworks like on silvester? example like that: - and for differnet colors you have use different powders / chemicals ... b.t.w. you could also use a single rocket green or red or any other as a sign for other players or as a short but huge lightsource for an area in the night (like in a war / used by soldiers).
