So, what do you guys do during temporal storms?
Echo Weaver replied to Briskethead's topic in Discussion
Is there a sweet spot for height where you can still kill drifters but their thrown rocks don't usually land? -
I guess my stupidest wolf story is about not dying to them. (Most of my deaths to wolves involve getting slaughtered before I see them.) After many lethal noob run-ins with wolves, I got to knowing when the sounds were close as well as what to look for. As soon as I heard that beginning, menacing growl, I took off like a shot. Thing is, it seemed there were ALWAYS wolves around my base. They were always howling. I wondered if I'd done a really bad job of placing my base. Then I realized that most of the growls were happening when I passed a certain spot on the map. So I took a deep breath and went TOWARD the growls. Two wolves had fallen down a pit and were trapped there. They'd been there for game-months, and I'd probably run away from them a dozen times. They were good eatin', and my surroundings got a lot quieter.

Huh. That does look like an oversight! I admit that 25% mining speed would make me crazy, though.
-
Haha. I have had that exact thing happen -- sleeping wolves look like sleeping boars or all variety of already dead animals. I'm like, "Either that's a wolf or a great source of meat. How close do I get to find out??"

I haven't used them yet either, but I've heard they work fine in 1.19.8 from other players who have used them, so I think they're a good bet. The others I'm using that I think really enhance gameplay are SaltyWater's immersion mods: Manual Scraping, Manual Tool Crafting, Immersive Ore Crush, Manual Dough, and Click Up Torches. I've been wanting to try Expanded Foods.

Oh, I do knapping during storms, usually spearheads. It works. It's just trippy, and it takes longer because I make more mistakes. But is not of the essence, so it's just entertaining. -
Hi, I'm Echo, and I haven't made iron yet! I love homesteading and hate PvP. I'm not super crazy about combat in general. I usually have more fun figuring out how to mitigate for avoid danger. I don't know if this lines up with your playstyle, but I had been wanting to set up a Homo Sapiens game with the Fauna of the Stone Age mods along with Primitive Survival. I see you already have Primitive Survival. The fauna mods would almost certainly make for a big change in the feel of the game, so that might not be your thing. That's what makes them appealing to me -- the world would be teeming with wildlife, though some of that wildlife would be dangerous. What time zone are you in? I'm in Eastern ETA: Oh, you already put that in your title. Whoops.

I definitely die to wolves much less now that I have experience with them. I'm not sure they're too slow, though. I can get away as long as I don't make any mistakes and can start running as soon as I hear them notice me. (If I see them first, I can usually get out of sight.) Since I can't really watch from a distance, I don't know how far ahead of them I am when I'm running, though, or if I'm gaining ground. I know they will only chase for a certain distance. If I can get out ahead of them, I can usually stay there until they give up. I'm not sure why you didn't get chomped before you started running though. I'm not sure if that was a bug or a compensation for having the menu open.

When I read the descriptions of these mods, I can just picture a Stone Age vibrantly alive, where early human is just an afterthought. It's very different from the quiet-cataclysm setting of default Vintage Story.

Knapping or building pottery during a temporal storm is certainly a trip -

When I moved out of my early game dirt hovel, I adjusted it to be a temporal storm hideout. It's surrounded by a pit trap, so I kill whatever is down there when the storm starts abating. I don't always get the double-headed, but I do decently often. -
Really, the only way to figure this out is by bisect testing. First, disable ALL the mods except the ones that come with the Vintage Story install. I would actually clear out the mods folder rather than disabling them in the mod manager, just to be extra sure. Verify that the game plays as expected. Then load in half your mods. If the game crashes, then remove half and see if it runs. If it runs, switch to the other half and see if that crashes. Continue to divide by half until you've narrowed down to the bad mod. If it's an incompatibility, then the problem might be two mods, which makes the problem a bit thornier, but the strategy is similar. When you find the problem mod(s), you can report the incompatibility to the mod developers.

I think a level is just a vertical row of blocks.

TemporalGearSpawnNerf (mainly for Wilderness Survival)

Oh, I was confused by that setting. Thanks for the explanation. How do you know how many respawns you've used? -

It looks like this mod was last updated for 1.14, so it's probably not useful to you. I like this idea, too. Maybe someone will revive it. -
I would also suggest to open your mods folder and physically delete/move everything out of that folder. Then there's no confusion over whether you accidentally failed to uncheck a mod.

Shrug, I just have a different playstyle. I'm a sneaker rather than a fighter. I enjoy contriving ways to avoid head-to-head combat or tilt the conflict wildly in my favor. If I try out Primitive Survival, I'm sure I'll enjoy traps. I'm playing mod-light right now because vanilla is still fresh, but in a future game I'll give it a spin. (Heh. I also enjoy building unique experiences each time I play a game like this. I'm already pondering a Homo Sapiens save with Primitive Survival and the stack of Fauna of the Stone Age mods.)

Isn't the time to harvest scaled for the time scale you choose? I haven't messed with the default time scale, but I assumed I'd get the same number of berry harvests regardless. Not true?

If we're talking about early-game food in general, it makes me crazy how low the fish spawn rate is. Entire cultures have fed themselves primarily from fishing, but I can only find 2 in pools shallow enough for spear fishing about every 4 days. I suppose plentiful fish makes early game too easy? With my low fertility harvest the first year, I dug up a lot of thatch and cattail roots.

Yes, it seems like I have enough before the first winter. Around my base, red currants are the thing, with a smattering of black currants. I have one blueberry bush ;). Though after a while I just focused on red and black currants, since the main effect of berry variety seems to be that they require more inventory slots. I didn't think about it when gathering and replanting them, but it's probably a good idea to stagger their flowering cycles so that you get medium harvests with shorter time between, especially since they spoil so quickly.

I've played Minecraft with a 32x32 texture pack for years. 16x16 has always been too much for me. I also truly hate the big-headed baby animals. They are creepy. That said, I've had hours of fun in Minecraft. I agree with whoever said it wasn't really a survival game anymore. It's an exploration and adventure game, I'd say. It's just a bunch of stuff to do all piled in to one game, but it can be great fun.

Where would one get the human skull? The only humans in the game right now are traders.
-
I'm not terribly concerned about future-proofing my strategies. Every release is going to involve playstyle changes, and that's what they're supposed to do. The game's under active development, so anything could change. What works now seems fine, at least for me. ETA: I see that loose stones are spawnable. I don't know where my friend got the info that those worked Maybe that was added to the list at some point. It's kind of a cheat anyway. I'll do something else.

Does the glue actually 'repair' broken clutter?
Echo Weaver replied to NastyFlytrap's topic in Questions
I'm not a builder in the sense of folks posting pictures of amazing block sculptures on this and other forums. I build functional homes that contribute to my immersion in the world. A piece of cool decor found while exploring is a kind of trophy that adds both character and a sense of achievement to my base. Functional stuff is better, but decor definitely has its place. It ticks me off that you can't remove wallpaper without a mod (or does glue do that? That seems counter-intuitive, but I haven't tried it).
