You put the pottery in a 1x1x1 hole then put in dried grass, sticks, and firewood in that order. Then light it up. It seems to be broken at the moment though. Once it's done burning the pottery is gone and you are just left with an empty hole. Looking that the issue tracker it should be fixed in pre11 maybe.
