Is your cellar already 7 blocks tall?
-
I was thinking more of other materials, but animals make a good point. I wasn't thinking about the freshness timers and how that interacts with stacking, but you're right, that is an important consideration.

Can we have harvest into inventory? The waiting for item to drop and probably somewhere we've moved away from or can't reach (especially when mining) was one of the things about Minecraft that drove me absolutely crazy. Can we not get rid of it? Is it unreasonable to expect that the thing I spent the time to cut/chop/mine/dice we can assume I want to pick up and take with me?
-
I consider the time spent on an individual task being more important; I would rather spend less time chopping that tree or mining that block. Now I suppose if I wasn't making steel I wouldn't need to do either of those tasks. End game you could stop gathering any resources if you really wanted to. Just live off raw food that you are probably growing a large excess of. Maybe make a new sword or some arrows once in a while. Some repair material for your armor. Speaking of armor, the vast superiority of steel plate alone seems to make it worth the effort to me. Or do all y'all just wear tailored gambiossed and call it good?

Indirectly. I don't know for sure, I would imagine it is tied to the temperature and rainfall, or maybe just the rainfall. It could be completely random. Altitude might play into it too. It does seem that if you look in the places you would expect good fertility IRL you will find it here. Like Thor said, swamps and bogs. If you are in the middle of a vast desert then you might legitimately not find any good soil.

Maybe iron, definitely not worth it with steel or even meteoric. I have not played with the bombs yet, that's a good idea. Explosives make everything fun. Could try genning a new save and flying around in creative to cover more ground faster but not ruin your actual game save.

I can't be bothered to make flint tools after a certain point. Iron and steel durability too high to care. The whole thing is too labor intensive. Cut trees. Make firewood. Make charcoal. Harvest charcoal. Rinse. Repeat. Ad nauseum. I don't know what kind of automation/mass production scheme would work for this game, but there needs to be one end-game. Play MP and enslave everyone to work in your coal mines? That could be fun for one, not so much for everyone else.

I feel the same, which is why I haven't built it yet either. I have T3 which almost never break, but I just can't be bothered at this point, and honestly the late game charcoal is such a drag I get the itch to restart again. Making coke isn't any less of a chore either and so the last thing I want is another furnace to feed. Just going to take my steel plate and head into the caves until I get bored.

Hahahaha. You would love some of the spawns I have gotten. Killed by wolves/bear a days run from spawn point you say? Try killed at your spawn point. Repeatedly. That is what happens when you spawn in a pine forest near a trader. Assuming it isn't you missing something obvious, it sounds like you just had a bad encounter with RNG. I may have had to look around a bit but I have not had to go far to find medium soil in any of my worlds (except the one where I spawned in large gravel fields).

24 pits? Lordy. You sound like someone who needs the new beehive kiln!

Yeah, Ape is right. Sometimes your location just sucks. I have gone through many restarts trying to find terrain that I am happy with. While I would prefer to just naturally play I feel I have invested far too much time into maps to find them lacking in one thing or another and so I now go and do a fly around in creative before I commit to anything, and there are several terrain generation mods to try.

Yes. You type in what you want to scan for. You can select multiple things at once. You can also save groups of presets to swap between. I like to keep one for arrows and animals, since I'm friggin blind it helps me to keep track of targets and retrieve my arrows. Hit scan. It can be a little fussy to adjust the range, at least it is for me. I think all of the GUI mods are a bit fiddly. So if it gives you trouble, click on the search box then click on the range box, then click an arrow on the range, then you can select and delete all the text in it and type in a range. It also seems to ignore the first keypress every time.

Sounds about right. I just looked at the title of this thread and thought, I bet some Aussie is gonna read that and say to himself "Vegemite?"

There is a block mod that does that, I don't know how it works though since I haven't tried it.
-
So it's still worthwhile making the compost TP since it has higher fertility. Potash seems to work normally as fertilizer on it, but doesn't give the bonus. It's still a nice option if you've got it since it takes so long to make compost.
-
There is actually. https://mods.vintagestory.at/xray You can set it up to scan for whatever you like. Use at your own peril, if you like prospecting and exploring and the like, this could ruin your game.

Yeah, I use a lot of QOL mods. If I were forced to play vanilla, I'd never have bought this game. Still I've also taken to warmer climates and it seems more frequent there, although it might just be that I found a lot of rainy areas. Right now I'm living around 30 lat which is not too hot and not too cold, although I am contemplating moving North again to see snow. Oh, I also only plant 128 blocks of fields and that's it, if you go bigger than obviously you'll have less to spare. Also higher temps are not all they are cracked up to be. Sure you can grow all year, but food rots faster. I can't even salt meat before it goes bad. Growing still seems to slow down in the winter even if it doesn't get all that cold too. Oh, yeah, I neglected to mention the lower quality soils, but you can only go 1 step. So if you use it to make medium high, you can spam away on it and it isn't going to become TP.

When seeds are food. It's one of those areas where realism has to give way to simplicity for games sake. The same with the grain, and the potato and...turnips are root crops too, I guess they are their own seed too. Considering you can eat the roots of cattails and thule, like Porkbrick said, you can probably eat the nuts too. I haven't felt the need to try. I make steel and I eat real food and vino...lots and lots of vino.

That would be awesome! I'd laugh my ass off even if I were the victim of a prank using such a feat of engineering.

Yeah, like Thorfinn said, I would try that mod (I use it myself) and maybe do your own for medium. I suppose if you are in a vast desert you might not find any better soil but are you looking for very green areas on your map? (Assuming you set it to true color, because the default is stupid). So something else I discovered yesterday, you can use potash on a HQ farm block and it turns into TP, except it has lower stats than the TP you make from compost. I am still trying to determine if after time it becomes normal TP or not. I also don't know if this is an old feature or not since I roll with 1.20PR. I would think it is something from before the crafted block and should be on the chopping block, but I don't know the feature history.

Hoe the ground under the crop. It can be a bit fiddly. You might need to dig out the block next to it to do it from the side. Low fertility farming ugh. If you don't want to restart you should head south. Winter at 30 lat is cozy, can farm year round, with great variety. Although I kinda do miss the snow. Days are also still kinda short in the winter there, you need to go further south yet for longer days.
-
I believe it does. I've found it not worthwhile to wait for them. Better to just get the seeds and get to farming. You don't get full drops out of wild crops anyway. Now in 1.19.8 you can still cheat and plow the ground under them to make them yield full but that was fixed in 1.20 so abuse it if you wish, but don't get used to it.
-
Hopefully they tune them. Although supposedly the drifters got their rock-throwing nerfed and I am not feeling it either. I've modded the 2 new mobs out, I dislike them that much. They are very annoying. The drifters are annoying too, but the game would just be empty without them. It's the same for the temporal storms, I like the idea but the execution is rubbish. Otherwise, there is a lot of really great stuff in 1.20
-
It's too time consuming and the soil drys out too fast to do on anything but a small scale. Early game I now look for rainy areas to build so the farm is kept fully hydrated with no effort, but you of course can't rely on it.
-
Oh yeah, it is worthwhile. Just the other 4 gives you 10 HP, the dairy will add another 2.5.
