I had the same happen to me recently. Tried to fight all of them and got lucky enough to have survived the ordeal.

I too have seen a huge influx in mob spawns after the recent update. I also counted 12 rifts near my house and it was only high activity after not having ever been even half that many near during a apocalyptic amount.
