It's quite possible, and very satisfying. -
You need a prospecting pickaxe, it has a radius check, and a big area check, that tells you the concentration of ores. So you can sort of probe like that. And also a bit of luck, and searching. Good luck.

Found 2 translocators on the island. Some good early access meteorite and iron, and pretty much all the ores to make bronze and a good bit of copper. Quite a few ruins and cave ruins.

Wanted an archipelago type world. So got a pretty nice starter island. So much good stuff on it, and some islands close by. Haven't explored much. But try it out if you want, it's pretty good. Seed: -171057458 Landcover: 50% Landcover scale: 300%
