I'm not sure what to say about this game that doesn't speak for itself. One thing I can say, is that I love this game with everything in me, and I'm happy to stick along for it's ride. :)

This is the most immersive and atmospheric survival game that I've played since Valheim, and it kept me up at night thinking about what challenges I'd take on for the next day after work.

Its greatest strengths are in in its commitment to faithfully representing the complexities of the physical world (models of rock and ore distributions, biomes, weather, etc) and technology (mixtures of metals to form alloys, forging, mechanical devices, clothing and structural insulation, food spoilage, etc.).  I feel far more accomplishment in learning these complexities than I would in simply grinding my way up another numerical level of skill and unlocking more capabilities, as is the case in other games.

I might wish for the default settings of the game to be more forgiving, allowing one to layer in more challenge through the Settings options.  Or at least I'd wish to place the spawn location far from wolves and bears by default if the tutorial mode is selected.  For example, I had really wanted my son to take to VS as he did with (that other block game), but he insisted on playing it on the default settings that are rather hardcore because he believed that was how the game was meant to be played.  Alas, despite my advising him he died many times, always starting over from scratch, and eventually burned out before reaching bronze.  I hope to convince him to return to it with me, perhaps in multiplayer co-operative mode.

Best game I've played all year, I wish I had gotten it sooner. There's definitely a learning curve and you have to do a LOT of exploring sometimes, which I normally am not tooo much of a fan of, but this game is different as a good chunk of it is focused on the natural world, and it's made me enjoy discovering new places and leaving the comfort of my base. It's way more fun than your standard survival-craft game and very satisfying. There are a lot of tutorials online if you struggle finding direction on what to do next and how to do it, and is just overall an awesome and refreshing experience with how much low quality stuff is being sold on the market. This is incredibly well polished for being early access, I highly recommend!

One of the best made survival games I've played in many years, blending arcade realism with deep immersion in a masterful way.

The mechanics are very unique and the vibe is exquisite. Most important the dev team is focused and knows what they're doing. They have bite sized updates planned out, they check in on us regularly to let us know what's happening and keep the community alive. Also it runs on linux and the system requirements are itty bitty for a game of its scale. Check back in a year if you don't like the game as it is, chances are they added/fixed a bunch of stuff in that time.

I cannot believe I never heard of this game before.

The game feels, so vibrant, alive, beautiful sounds and graphics, amazing performance for such a game.

Lots, and LOTS of things to do. Where do I even begin?

The modding community is very nice. Tons of impressive mods that I already use.

I can see myself play this game for hundreds of hours to come.

I will be looking forward to your future updates!

Sure, a lot of people will assume Vintage Story is a minecraft clone, and it is in of itself a standalone of a very nice minecraft mod called Terrafirmacraft.

But the atmosphere and love and attention to detail in this game is on a totally different level that it feels wrong to compare this game to minecraft at this point. Despite both games being block games, Vintage Story looks, sounds, and feels so much more vibrant, alive, beautiful and engaging. I still like minecraft but Vintage Story has been filling a gap that minecraft has lost to me and that gap is challenge and reward. You can work to get some decent loot in minecraft, sure, after like 5 minutes then you can fight almost the whole world and be at no risk of losing your gear. In Vintage Story you're at the mercy of the world, and you need to work and toil to be able to scrape up a comfortable existence.

But why is that so important for the gameplay cycle? I made an iron pick in minecraft, cool, sure, I can go get some diamonds woohoo. I get an iron pick in Vintage Story? This thing is the fruit of literal hours of prospecting, mining, blooming, and shaping the metal into a pick. It's a real achievement, and by that I worked Hard to get this one single tool. This alone made this very simple experience into a level of being special that is dripping from all places in this game. It makes you Love your work, your progress. All of your work is slower and harder but it Means something. Your house is your pride and joy, your armor is your lifeline, even your meals are a satisfaction that just makes all of that work so worth it when you get there, I hardly ever feel this in minecraft anymore, minecraft is just more of an arcade, a game to kill time and play for the sake of nostalgia but Vintage Story fills that nostalgia in many more ways than modern minecraft can for me. That reason is because Vintage Story is a hard, hard game.

It's not unfairly difficult either, in their 2022 trailer it even says in the beginning "If you only do what is easy, your life will be hard" and that very much applies to the gameplay here, you work hard to live peacefully in this game and that's just something I cannot stop loving. This game in its early access state is such an accomplishment in what it does that I cannot recommend this even more, and I haven't even got into the atmosphere, the community, the QOL features, the sound design, everything else in this game truly has love put into it by a small indie dev, versus the mass produced slop of weak updates made by a corporation that sadly overshadows minecraft now.

Get this game, I guarantee starting out will be difficult, confusing and perilous, but that's the journey, that's what I miss from old minecraft. You will love it here, thank you for reading my review.

This is my favorite game of this year by far. Normally in sandbox survival games I just get bored after a week but this game has kept my interest for way longer and shows no signs of losing it. The clayworking, smithing, and mechanical power systems are really well put together and I can't wait to see how this game evolves as more features from the roadmap are added.

I find it a difficult task to speak about just how good this game really is. It's an experience, One unlike any other. I tried to write this review at least 5 times. For me, it's that difficult to do justice. This is very easily one of the most important video games to exist in the last 2 decades in my opinion. I've played almost every "sandbox open world survival" game that's on offer. None of them come close to the experience you get from Vintage Story. And none of them ever will.

Love this game!

TL;DR - more than a Minecraft clone, its a voxel adventure well worth the price of admission. Come join us on the official public server once you learn the basics!

Now to my itemized list...

Mods - Superb integration, easy to manage, tons of variety and a very active community

Servers - The built-in claims system & other QoL features make server play a breeze. I love the fast travel systems that make city building a cool experience. I would like to see additional trade systems for offline trading... traders & AH do work but fees make it pretty painful to use on a big server 😕 this is an area of improvement, but honestly you add a couple mods & this issue is solved

Animals are infinitely more interactive than competitors and successfully domesticating a herd is fabulously worthwhile

Mobs are terrifying and dangerous. Almost too much so LOL. Love that armor levels can make it so you can handle them but I think a brewing system with buffs and etc would level the playing field a ton. This is on the roadmap & I hope that it isn't too far away!

Crafting is solid, the 3x3 grid is a standard now & that makes it unremarkable but there are a ton of alternate crafting methods for advanced materials that are way more fun. Smithing your own tools is extremely satisfying, 10/10 would Smith forever if I had a friend group big enough to keep feeding me materials lol 😆

Cooking & storing foods is its own challenge that I really enjoy. I can see why some could see tedium in it, but I love survival challenges and this one is perfectly manageable once you get the hang of it, and there's tons of tools for preservation as you progress, like salt for pickling and etc.

Overall - 10/10. I have areas for growth, sure, but they are minor enough that I can't knock off any rating and I am excited that the devs are improving constantly 🙌🙌🙌

Ps. RIP Hytale, we hardly knew ya. Long live Vintage Story!!!

I'll keep my review short and sweet.

It's very obvious this game has  an aesthetic much like Minecraft. But the core difference is Minecraft is a block building game with small survival elements. Vintage story on the other hand is a Survival game with block building elements. The game has a built in mod system, and official new update/content drops are consistent.

The gameplay has a learning curve that is tough to get into, but ultimately rewarding.  You can very tangibly feel the progress in your world  as you go from barely surviving in a harsh world to thriving in a homestead that you pieced together. The feeling of seeing your carved out piece of land being the only beacon of light during the dark night in an abandoned world is not so easily replicated in another game I've played.

I'm assuming that anyone seeing this review, knows what a blocky builder game is. Thus, I would easily recommend this title to any one who likes said blocky builder games. The community surrounding it is small but friendly, and growing more and more by the day.

Give this game a shot, I promise you and your friends will enjoy it.

Often labeled as "Minecraft for grown-ups", Vintage Story provides an uncompromisingly realistic and deeply satisfying survival and crafting experience. With every hunt being a fight to the death, every harvest a reason for a festival and every encounter with the supernatural hair raising. If you're tired of the same old survival games, for ~20$ this is a breath of fresh air that will keep you coming back for years. Tip: For your first playthrough, be afraid of the forest ;)

i just bought this game after catching wind of its existence quite a while back. and WOW!!! i am so happy i decided to go out on a whim and buy it. it is SO cool!!!

i have been a minecrafter since early 2012, and i always craved something more out of it. the progression was too linear and straight-forward. but here, vintage story provides a plethora of new steps and mechanics that help in making the game so much more complex and captivating. i absolutely looove the knapping and pottery mechanic, it is so ingenious (and so satisfying). the realistic fire/torches, the nutrients bars, the temperature drops; these are all just base level things, as i have only just started, but they are exactly what separate it from just being another sandbox game, to actually being a survival game. the element of the temporal entities add another layer that keeps things interesting outside of just the survival.

i bought this for both my partner and i, and i have already drilled in over 8+ hours just overnight! there is so much more i can't wait to discover.

despite the fact that it is an indie game constructed by only a small team, it runs absolutely seamlessly. i have not experienced any glitches, and despite the gorgeous graphics, it is not at all as demanding as other games in its genre. i would provide small critique but as it is still being updated and edited i don't feel that it is warranted. i  have full trust in whatever you guys are working on.

keep up the good work, devs!! i am beyond excited for any new content you guys conjure up; what you have created so far is brilliant. 💚

I’ve always been very selective about buying games - in my entire life, I’ve only purchased two games, and I’m already 29 years old.
I don’t like spending money on something that doesn’t truly move me, or on something I could just watch on YouTube.

But Vintage Story is different ❤️
It’s the kind of game that makes me want to reach out to the developers and say:

Thank you so much for creating this masterpiece made with heart and soul! 🌟

Every single cent was worth it, and I’m deeply grateful for the amazing emotions and experiences your game has given me. 🎮

I do not even have 20 hours in the game yet. In fact, I am hurtling towards my first winter. That said, I am obsessed!  The game is deep and well thought out with just the right mix of cozy, and scary.

Im stunned by how deep this game goes into the survival genre.

Obviously because the graphics are so similar that it's hard to not initially compare it to Minecraft. But after a couple of hours it becomes clear that this game is so different from Minecraft in every conceivable way.

Absolutely five stars so far. Love it. Obsessed! Please bring it to console! LOL  As a 50-something year old lady with carpal tunnel the fact that I can't use my chunky controller is the only thing that breaks my heart about this game. In fact, I  rarely venture from my console due to the carpal tunnel, but  I did it this time and I do not regret it.

If you are into survival games, get it you won't regret it.

I love this game.

It took me a while before purchasing it after I've heard about it from one of Ethoslab's videos. I don't know why I waited, this game is everything it promises to be and such a joy to discover and play. I'm 50 hours into my first world and going through my first winter, and I just got iron tools.

The slow pace makes the game feel cozy and makes all your achievements so much more rewarding. Building a house, making metal tools, cooking and stockpiling for the winter, everything has more impact because what it took to get there. There is so much to do that even if things take time, you never feel bored and never need to idle. It's one of those games where I write down notes on my phone about what to do next because I can't stop thinking about the game when I'm not playing.

It also looks beautiful, especially as you see the seasons change.

There were a few small things that I didn't like about the game, and all of them had a mod to change it. With builtin support for modding, you literally only have to click one button in the mod page and it gets downloaded in the game. I've never had issues adding mods to my existing world either.

If you watched the trailer and it speaks to you, just go for it!

This game is addictive! I love the way the game is developping all the challenges the environment provides for you. If you like some mechanics that were originated from TFC but tries to go further, I really recommend for you to try this game.

This game is NOT a minecraft clone. Knowing how to play MC will not help you at all in figuring out the game unless you play only in creative. Love both games, each in their own ways.

Several things that i absolutely love about this game:

1. it's EXTREMELY customizable, when you generate a new world, you get several play styles to choose from. You can still go in the settings yourself to make the experience more to your liking. You can set the average temperature of your world, set the amount of rainfall, disable seasons and adjust the length of months, pick what kind of climate you'll spawn in, tool durability... and even set it so monsters wont spawn at night for up to10 in game days after world gen if you want to and many more things. Everything is made so you can make each world exactly the way you want it to be.

It can be a hardcore survival adventure, a creative building game or a relaxing journey, you choose exactly how you play.

2. The world is beautiful. I spent a large amount of time on my first world, just looking at the scenery and picturing what i could build there, every season is beautiful, every "biome" is gorgeous. The plants slowly changing color as fall progresses then turns to winter, the night sky looks really nice aswell and i loved the little extra detail of seeing aurora in the sky when far enough up north.

3. The handbook. If you don't like tutorials, you can skip it entirely, the handbook is always available in game and you can open it whenever to want to. If you just want to relax, enjoy the game, build and only learn a new mechanic when you feel like it, you can do just that.

4. It runs very well, i have a not very good laptop and already a full collection of mods to add more species of animals and plants and structures and all sorts of things. It doesn't lag one bit, it occasionally freezes for a couple seconds when my laptop runs a bit too hot but nothing that a fan can't fix. I only experienced a couple crashes with large mods, fixed with a simple item library expension. No crashes since. The game autosaves pretty often too so no progress lost.

5. Very immersive survival. starting bare handed, carving a blade in a rock and finding a stick to make your first knife and start cutting reeds to make a basket. Making your first axe, making firewood, making a spear and learning how to hunt, making leather, melting ores and pouring molten copper into a mold then waiting for it to cool down so you can get your first pickaxe... it's a whole experience and even though it sounds tideous and overwhelming at first, it comes so naturally, especially with the help of the hand book. And it feels so rewarding every time to go through a new step in the development of your home.

6. Extra details: Love the seasons, makes the game all the more immersive. The sounds are very pleasant, even just walking on gravel is satisfying. The survival menu showing current temperature, date, time and how common rainfall is in the area is such a good feature especially when looking for a good place to settle. Great dev support. The possibility to choose how often the soundtrack plays in game is a nice touch. Finding abandonned settlements underground reminded me of finding lost miner houses in Terraria caves.

A couple things that could be improved/fixed:

I mostly thought it was too bad that wolves cannot be domesticated in vanilla.

Lacks name tags or collars or anything to identify/name your animals. it's such a silly detail but it really feels like it's missing.
