Why do my candles keep burning and breaking

I put my candle on the floor.
I light it with my torch
It burns away and breaks

What am i doing wrong!?

Candles are already lit when placed*. There is no need to light them with a torch. They just offer very weak light.

You can improve their light output by stacking multiple candles in the same blockspace.

 

(*unless you are using a mod)

Oh... I guess that explains it - but it is rather counter-intuitive that "lighting" it with the torch burns it as if it were a piece of grass
