Looking for a way to use a controller, any help would be much appreciated.

I am relatively new to having a PC, I'm admittedly not very good at playing games with a mouse and keyboard and was hoping I could find a way to use an Xbox controller. I attempted to map it out on steam but things (like the left joystick for movement) never worked properly or some (like clicking in the joystick to crouch or whatever) never worked at all. any advice or help would be very appreciated. I understand that there's a lot of buttons to map and actions that require a mouse but I'm sure someone out there has come up with a decent enough set up to make the controls more friendly for someone like me, thanks in advance for any advice.
