Shan Fazz Posted January 11, 2024 Report Posted January 11, 2024 Hello All! New player here, who admittedly, hasn't been able to play yet. When I launch the game the game doesn't launch in HDR, nor does window's try to fake HDR on the game. Fine. But the issue is deeper than that. The game, once launched, reverts a lot of my Windows HDR settings. So I have to manually correct and fix those. What's more odd, that if I play with it just right I can trick the game to display in HDR (and it looks great) but only so long as I'm out of the game, the game is running on a different monitor and I switch HDR Back On (because the game turns my Windows' HDR setting off) the Game will View on the other monitor in HDR and it looks great. Until I try to play the game, once I make the game the active Window, HDR is Shutoff on Windows Again. So. Friends. Any help on this would be much appreciated. The game on my monitor with HDR off is just not playable for me. It's very very dim and dull - like if you were driving but your windows was covered in a thin layer of Soot and it's almost night time.
lemonke Posted January 13, 2024 Report Posted January 13, 2024 (edited) Hi Shannon, I got curious and started looking up Windows HDR problems in forums. Yikes. You have my sympathy. Sounds like one of these classic industry-wide failure scenarios that could be caused by anything. Monitor settings, monitor cables, monitor drivers, monitor hardware, graphics chips, graphics drivers, whatever in the poorly conceived hell MSI Dragon Center is... some rando on reddit thinks it's a known Nvidia bug in fullscreen modes in games, might try running the game in windowed mode. I definitely can't help you, swore off Windows myself, but 0-reply forum threads are depressing, so I thought I'd commiserate. Edited January 13, 2024 by lemonke 2

I did notice, now that you mentioned the Windowed vs Fullscreen item that when I select to run the game windowed in The Game settings it simply ignores that and runs fullscreen. I could be doing something wrong, but I wouldn't know what. Anyway. I didn't think I would strike gold here, but was hoping someone would have tinkered with it enough or experienced issues with HDR and this game to have some workaround.
Maelstrom Posted January 23, 2024 Report Posted January 23, 2024 You may want to try the VS discord for help. That is a lot more active and more responsive than the forums here.

Maelstrom Posted January 25, 2024 Report Posted January 25, 2024 Probably the vintsagestory channel is a good place to start.

I'm late to this topic. For my setup, I personally had to enable "Prefer Layered on DGXI Swapchain" in the Nvidia control panel to get the borderless window feature to work. I hope this helps. ivandagiant Posted July 16, 2025 Report Posted July 16, 2025 (edited) Man this is so broken for me, not sure why. Alt tabbing makes my audio from other applications stop for a moment, and even though it is "borderless windowed" it acts as if it is fullscreen with a black screen when alt tabbing. Really irritating. Tried the DXGI swapchain setting and saw no difference. Turning off HDR makes the black screen much shorter and doesn't mangle my audio, but it still isn't the behavior I expect from a borderless window The DXGI swapchain setting causes me to get a black screen for a moment whenever I click on a GUI or button in game Edited July 16, 2025 by ivandagiant
Coffeetooth Posted October 19, 2025 Report Posted October 19, 2025 Came to this thread with the same issue - Working fully after editing the screenWidth and screenHeight in clientsettings.json with the correct resolution for my monitor, enabling the "layered on DXGI swapchain" setting for vintagestory above, and setting the video settings ingame to Fullscreen. Bit of a dance, but this fixed alt-tabbing and Window's HDR color settings going bad for me. 1 2
