Maple Syrup

Maple trees everywhere but no maple syrup?!?

Bronze or better forging of taps.

Buckets to collect the sap.

A non-alcohol reason to craft the boiler, no condenser needed (30l of sap reduces to 2l of syrup)/

Alternative to honey in food recipes but not poultices

No wax, of course

Sap collection only works in March

Collection shouldn't work just in march but whenever the temperature fluctuates below ans above 0 throughout a day night cycle. I think that's how it works irl.

I also think it shouldn't require a boiler. A cooking pot should suffice. irl it's 40:1 sap to syrup  but 15:1  as you suggested might be more reasonable. I would consider something rounder like 10:1 so that a bucket yields 1 liter of syrup. Unlike honey it should go bad but it should have a long shelf life. perhaps a year or so at room temperature

I'd love maple syrup, especially if it can be added to porridge and things 😀 I seem to recall reading somewhere that the devs intend to add more food options to the game, but it's not a priority right at the moment. It's something that I would expect to be potentially slipped in to a future update though, either as a small extra or a major feature.

A couple of updates ago (I think 1.16) devs attempted to make peppers that would be a perennial plant that produced harvestable crop routinely (much like fruit trees currently) but could be harvested on site like grain and vegies.  Unfortunately, it was really buggy and hasn't made a reappearance since.

Not necessarily.  Realize the development team is small.  For coder there's one full time dev and a couple or few part time helpers.  Look at the roadmap to see what the vision is for the game.  Tyron (full time coder) has recently said that the game is maybe 10% complete.

Oh I totally understand that, but i had hoped to actually learn modding for vintage story however if someone who actually knows modding was having trouble doing something similar then I likely have no hope lol. Still won't stop me from having a look and trying to figure it out :)

I would also be interested in seeing this taken to the next step by making maple sugar by boiling it more and maybe pressing into an ingot mold and then grinding in the quern or something.

I really like this idea for two reasons.
1. It adds even more player presence in the world. One of my personal favorite things about the game, is that leaving piles of material, or tools laying around makes the game feel very lived in, personalized, and immersive. Seeing trees with taps and buckets under them would further that sense of presence and intractability.

2. I like the idea of syrup being an alternative to honey for cooking. Having the option to take care of bees for honey is great, but If you have to farm bees every playthrough for those specific items, the game will start to get repetitive. Allowing alternate options of items or progression could alleviate that sense of requirement and repetition. Syrup can be an alt of honey, and maybe there could be an alt of beeswax for candles, like making tallow from animal fat. Just so you don't feel like you have to keep bees every time you play.

I second rendering tallow from animal fat. This probably could be done easily with the cooking pot over the fire pit.
