Its honestly more frustrating than its worth. Usually its better just to throw a rock at them and get them to chase you. You cant bring an animal uphill hardly at all, with enough wrangling eventually but its honestly so annoying that i wouldnt even try it.

I think a way it could be improved would be if there was some way to immobilize or knock out a creature. Maybe by feeding it something with some kind of tranquilizing stuff on it, or by making a net, or embracing caveman and knocking it out with a club. Whatever the solution would be, i think it needs to be something to make it not try to move around actively and make it easier to drag around. I think the animal ranching side of the game would be a lot better if we had a better solution for actually catching and transporting larger creatures.

It is, it's exceedingly frustrating.

It's also very much a WIP feature, and far from fully functional. My suggestion is to mod in a similar functionality.

Capture Animals and Animal Cages both function on 1.20.1, with my preference being Animal Cages. Then the difficulty in ranching isn't the time it takes to get the animals into a pen, it's in the time (and food!) investment it takes to get them to higher generations.

Or if nothing else, allow the agriculture traders to sell baby livestock occasionally...for a "small fee" of course. The animals could be base gen(or even gen 1) to avoid players bypassing too much of the animal husbandry game loop, and of course there's always the risk that you won't get what you need for a breeding pair without a few tries. Catching animals yourself still holds some advantage in that case because it's not only free, but you're also guaranteed a breeding pair most of the time.

Isn't this the point? Roping animals should be a "better safe than sorry" low risk method of getting an animal into a pen, or into a specific area without aggravating it and risking heavy injury if you screw up a jump. Also, for uphill, try shortening the rope. This makes it much easier to pull the animal up, and if it decides to walk in the direction of uphill just disconnect the rope, it might save you a minute or two if it walks up significantly.

I love the animal cages mod.  I think it is a bit too generous though, but I can't go without it.

After I had lost all of my livestock (several chickens and pigs) to a bear rampage, the mere thought of chasing animals into pits made me consider using creative to just spawn them back in.   Instead I opted for getting the animal cages mod and grabbed new pigs and chickens within a game-day or so.  I  now even have goats which spawn pretty far from my base so I'm very happy to be making some cheddar cheese now.   I also put up a lot more lanterns and high fences all around my base to keep the bears out.  fun times.
