Insulate rooms with gears and axles throughout?

I am building a smithy to be fully contained in a room. This building has a drive train that runs under the floor, connecting to windmills outside. Im trying to make sure this room is insulated but im having problems with it. It appears that the holes that connect the building's drive train to the windmill's drive train aren't insulated, like axle blocks and angled gears dont count as insulation. How can i make this room insulated?

You cannot insulate a room with windmill-driven machinery in vanilla VS. There's a mod out there that creates a "Wall With Axle Through It" block to deal with that.

Personally I play without mods, so to stay warm while smithing I set up my helve hammer on one side of a wall, put a door in the wall so I can reach through and put things on the helve's anvil, and then me and the forges and my hand anvil stay on the other side in a warmed room. Looks like this.
