Server save to Single player world

I have downloaded the Save files from an official server.  I would now like to be able to play that world as a single player game.  However, when I put the files into the save directory, I get a message about "Invalid or corrupted savegame".  When I try to start that world, the game starts into repair mode.  However, it never completes.
 

Should I be able to play a server save game as a single player world?  What steps need to happen to accomplish this?

I was unable to make that work myself. I'm sure there is a way but you got me on how to do it.
