I used to be able to, so I'm not sure what happened, but today I restarted developing one of my old mods, compressed it (with the contents at the root of the zip, not the containing folder), put it in ~/.config/VintageStoryData/Mods, just like Linux and... doesn't show up in the list.

After double and triple checking, I couldn't find anything wrong, so I went to go steal a working mod and harvest it for parts but it turns out that nothing I put in the ~/.config/VintageStoryData/Mods folder loads at all. This is the correct folder, when I click the "Open Mods Folder" inside VintageStory, this is what opens. It's just not actually loading anything from there. And ~/.c/VSD/ is being used, there are recently modified files in here, and if I create a new world, it pops up in /Saves. It just doesn't like /Mods.

Any idea what I might be doing wrong here?

Check out https://wiki.vintagestory.at/VintagestoryData_folder#MacOs. Does that information help?

Ditto on what Echo Weaver said. Was totally unaware unaware that paths were moving for 1.21. Unfortunately I'm still on 1.20, so the location I have *should* be correct.

But that link you have does mention a secondary location, the mods folder in the installation folder. On macOS that would be inside the vintagestory.app bundle itself, which is very odd. I thought that would break 37 different things with signatures and whatever else but it actually seems to work. Doesn't explain why the first folder is broken, but hey, it works!

Jesus! While Windows is busy trying to be more like Mac, Mac is trying to be more like Windows? (went from a Linux like path to a Windows like path)

What kind of crazy world is this? Anyway, I'll leave you fruits to it.

Another idea. Check "modPaths" in "clientsettings.json" (found in VintagestoryData). This has to point towards the correct folder(s) or mods won't show up in the game.

Ohhh you know I guarantee that's it. I copied my clientsettings from my Steam Deck so I wouldn't have to keep logging back in when I found out that was possible. I bet you it's looking in /home/deck/.config from SteamOS, not /Users/jaromino/.config from macOS.

I guess the Open Mods Folder button doesn't follow clientsettings.json?

That's it then. Those paths are absolute and don't change.

I am just as surprised as you are. It's either a caching thing or the default is somewhere referenced in the game code.

Coming to this months later.  I'm not able to see installed mods in my 1.21 installation on a Mac.  I've only been playing in recent months, so only 1.21.x.

I have installed a couple of mods in the opened mod folder, under [PRE]~/Library/Application Support/VintagestoryData/Mods[/PRE].  I see two zip files there, but when I start the game they don't show up in the mod manager.  From within a game, I tried "/moddb list" and it tells me no 3rd party mods are installed.

The text in the App's "Mods" folder, `do_not_add_mods_here.txt`, tells me not to put it there.  But it doesn't work.

Anyone have any idea what is going wrong?

I have installed nbcartographer both locally and on a server I play on, and it downloads and works when I connect to that server.  But neither that mod, and I'm now trying to get ProspectTogether working in single-player (for server later), and no go still.  Why can't I get them working locally?

[edit]

Oh, and my clientconfig.json has "modPaths" set to a list of "Mods", and the full path of my Mods folder in VintagestoryData.  Two strings.  Looks right.
