Very new and trying to follow the in-game tutorial

I am trying to make a fire, but the tutorial skips over getting firewood. Trying to work it out, it looks like I need a flint axe, which needs a bone? Or, is there another way?

You can make it with a stick, like the knife ! 
Sticks can be found on the ground in forest, or by breaking branchy leaves :]

Welcome to the forums! It doesn't need to be a flint axe--you can make an axe head out of any sufficiently hard stone. Obsidian, granite, peridoite, chert, andesite, and basalt are all viable for stone tools. And like @Cube_Mandala said, you can use a stick for the handle, though a bone will give you a bit more durability.

Of course, cracked vessels that contain tools often contain axes, though acquiring an axe this way may not be an option if you're playing Homo Sapiens(lore content off).

If you saw the bone in the recipe of the ingame manual, note that when different ingredients are possible to make the same item the manual flashes through the variations. So for the flint axe, it would have shown you "bone plus flint axe head" - but keep watching, it will flash to "stick plus flint axe head" soon.
