How to empty a Bowl of rotten food?

When a crock contains rotten foot it will eventually turn into an empty crock automatically.

With a bowl there is no timer displayed and I found no action that would empty it.
(well, eating that "food" empties the bowl but... that's yucky =))

Tossing it into water should clean it out.

I had tried to place it in water but that only replaced the water block...

He's exactly right, throwing the bowl of rot into the water (for me my key is Q) extracts the rot and cleans the bowl and standing next to it you pick them all up.

I wanted to keep the rot for compost so this was a good hint.
