I can't find a straight answer anywhere, I've got a couple chickens in a little coop, just now getting generation 3, I was hoping to get a gen 3 rooster that wouldn't be as skittish so I chased my first one into a seperate pen (since the roosters apparently kill each other), it should be out of range of the troughs ~10 blocks, been about a month now and it's weight still says good. And the hens I've been feeding them grain daily since I have a bit of an excess, they dont get fat or overfed but do I need to feed them so often? Wondering if they eat grass or something as long as it isn't winter? I know other animals need to be fed to get pregnant, but will the hens still lay unfertilized eggs if I let them starve?

Feeding animals is necessary for only two things - increasing their weight before slaughter to increase drops or to induce mating.   otherwise animals in VS are amazing critters that will find food to stave off starvation even if they are enclosed in a completely stone enclosure.
