ClockworkzAI Posted October 16, 2025 Report Posted October 16, 2025 Adding rats that will go after your stored food if you are away for too long, can make holes in the wall. too many rats in area can transfer diseases easier too food and players. Can tame rat and then can let him sit on shoulder and squeak if there is danger nearby. 1
Echo Weaver Posted October 16, 2025 Report Posted October 16, 2025 LOL. Someone brought this up on another thread as an example of Anego overdoing the challenge. I think rats going after stored food makes sense. I don't know about diseases. I guess the team is looking to add status effects in 1.22, so diseases could make sense. 1
Dirty_Wizard Posted October 18, 2025 Report Posted October 18, 2025 This is actually a great idea, the loss could be increased the more food you stockpile, as when you hit a certain amount the game becomes kind of too easy. Punish the player for stockpiling too much. Would need to place traps and poison to mitigate it. Maybe a cat mob or something. 1

Cats would awesome, Rats can be attracted by dead animals and rot, so you have to clean up after yourself to make sure you don't attract these creatures.

I don't disagree that it's maybe a little too easy to get a handle on foodstores, however, I don't agree with punishing the player for excessive stockpiling. Having extra is never really a bad idea, and in the case of cooperative multiplayer, large stockpiles are mandatory. Cats would be an obvious solution to rodents, but I also think a mechanic like this mod could be added: https://mods.vintagestory.at/rottingstorage Essentially, the player would need to check their foodstores semi-regularly and either use/dispose of foodstuffs that are getting too old, or else risk losing a big chunk of their foodstores. Gives a lot more value to preserving food via crocks, pickling, or salting.

Sure, but in the real world, large stockpiles of foodstuffs create plagues of rodents. If you stockpile tons and tons of food, you can expect massive numbers of pest animals to move in and start eating the food, so major stockpiling should come with major pest control measures... If we want realism

I think if you implement that you would definitely need a counter to them, such as cats or traps or poison (Can be made from the poisonous mushrooms)
