Is fire clay guaranteed under black coal?

I've found 5 entirely separate veins of black coal (bituminous coal) so far, and none had any fire clay whatsoever under, or anywhere near them. Am I doing something wrong, or is it just not a guarantee and I happen to get unlucky? All veins have been found within claystone by the way, if that changes anything. Never had this issue before. I'm playing on latest stable version.

Welcome to VS and the forums!

To my understanding, fire clay generating under black coal is possible but not guaranteed.  Given the plentiful deposits of red clay, gather up a stack of flint, bake it, grind it then mix it in with red clay.  You'll get 8 stacks of fire clay.   Best if you use the Better Firepits mod to make baking all that flint easier.  Also automate the quern with a windmill.

Yeah, that's okay, I'm aware of calcined flint and its use in making fire clay, I however won't lie that I got more than a little upset when the industrial amounts of fire clay that I usually find happened to not be anywhere 😭

Thanks, though! Both for the help and the warm welcome💜
