What exact event or action causes an animal to become owned by a player?

I have some goats captured in a pit trap that I am attempting to domesticate, but despite eating from a trough owned by me and producing kids, they are not marked as owned by me.

Does this actually matter in any way, and if so, what is the exact thing that one does with an animal to cause it to be owned?

Are you asking how to domesticate specifically the goats you captured? I don't think you can claim ownership over wild animals. Neither is there a way of domesticating a specific animal; they're born that way. This means you must continue to breed them and gradually, generation by generation, they become friendlier to you. Note that domestication level is always inherited from the dam, not the sire.

That doesn't exactly answer my question but it does sound like the answer to my question isn't relevant to anything, so I won't worry about it.

With debug details on you'll see a note like this on animals you've captured after some thing or another happens, and I'd like to know what that thing is, even if generation is the only thing that matters for domestication.

Welcome to the forums! I can't say that I've ever seen this, but if it's only visible with debug details turned on perhaps that is why. If it's vanilla, I would assume there's perhaps some placeholder code at work there, in that it's a feature that's not yet fully fleshed out. One thing I would check though, is make sure you're not using a mod that could be providing that kind of function.
