Gaelyn Posted Thursday at 10:10 PM Report Posted Thursday at 10:10 PM Does anyone know if 1.22 lets you catch a fish and then release it somewhere else without killing it? I really want to make an aquarium, and so I'm really hoping that there's a way to transport fish without killing them. 2

Given that there seem to be some crashing issues related to fishing, I'm not sure there's a good answer, yet. But based on what I've read in the patch notes, the fish that are caught seem to be dead, in which case you cook, fillet and cook, or mount them as taxidermy. 9 minutes ago, Gaelyn said: I really want to make an aquarium, and so I'm really hoping that there's a way to transport fish without killing them. I'd like to do this as well, but until we get the ability to catch and transport live fish, I'd recommend just spawning a few in from creative.
Gaelyn Posted Thursday at 10:31 PM Author Report Posted Thursday at 10:31 PM The patch notes don't specifically say anywhere that the fish immediately turns into a dead fish upon being caught (although it does seem like that's probably how fishing works ). I am holding out hope that the fish stays alive for a while in one's inventory, perhaps dying after a certain amount of time has passed. We already have the wolf pup you can purchase from traders, which is a live animal you can have in your inventory and can release into the world if you want. It seems like it would be simple to have fish work in a similar way.
Broccoli Clock Posted Thursday at 10:39 PM Report Posted Thursday at 10:39 PM For reference, butterflies when caught are dead, so it sort of tracks that fish when caught will also be dead.

True, but I believe that butterflies actually despawn after a while (fish do not), and so for the devs to make it so that you could, for example, catch butterflies and release them into your greenhouse, the butterflies would probably need to be converted into a persistent entity. This could mean that fish have a chance of working differently. I feel, though, that you're probably right about how it's been implemented.
Gaelyn Posted Thursday at 10:55 PM Author Report Posted Thursday at 10:55 PM Interestingly, I found this mod that allows butterflies to be caught live (and then released elsewhere): https://mods.vintagestory.at/butterflyredux Maybe someone will make a mod like this for fish if fishing ends up working the same way that catching butterflies does.

Gaelyn Posted Friday at 12:09 AM Author Report Posted Friday at 12:09 AM (edited) I finally caved and installed the unstable version just to find out for sure what happens with fishing. I can now confirm that the fish immediately dies upon being caught. Edited Friday at 12:11 AM by Gaelyn
