hello, i just tried the new fishing a little bit ago and am wondering if flaying them is ever a good idea. i caught a few adult chubs which when flayed turned into a raw slice of fish with 50 sat but when i cooked a chub as is it turned into a medium cooked fish with 400 sat, quite the difference. i then caught two adult blue cat fish and again when one was flayed it gave 4 raw fish with 50 sat and the one cooked without flaying turned into another medium cooked fish with 400 sat, still double the satiety without flaying. do larger fish start giving raw fish with higher than 50 sat or maybe just more of it to be equal to or greater than just cooking the fish as is? adding the flayed fish to meals is the only upside i can see but the loss of satiety doesnt seem worth it.

The amusing quirk of the fish fillet is that it gives:

  • raw, 50 satiety,
  • cooked, 100 satiety,
  • in meals, 375 satiety.

Their value in meals skyrockets so high that I''ve been questioning whether that's even intentional, since most food items only give 1.5x satiety in meals compared to the best alternative, not 3.75x. Until you have a cooking pot, you can cook the fish whole on the fire and might even come out slightly net positive over fillets. But, once you have a cooking pot, it is absolutely crucial to use all of your fish as fillets in meals, if you care at all about maximizing the satiety you obtain from them.

ah good point, i did just cook a raw slice and saw it jumped to 100 but didnt try in a meal yet. so i guess we can ignore my question if its that good in meals.

I think the idea is to cook the whole fish if you just need the satiety points, but otherwise flay and cook into a proper meal if you have the means to do so. By cooking the fillets into a proper meal, you're getting a pause on the hunger meter in addition to a lot of satiety.

Probably, though it seems especially valuable for bigger fish that yield several fillets. In those cases, a single fish can feed the player for several meals.

That's it, that's the thread, that's a wrap.

As mentioned by a few people, including myself, the fishy meals seem way OP considering the ease of their catch, but in general it also feels all meals are more filling.

I discussed this with @LadyWYT in another thread, about the start of 1.22 not being as rough as previous versions and whether that was intent or design and whether that's a good thing or not. Obviously it's all RNG, and we can get thrown to the wolves (both figuratively and literally), but it does feel there is less of a grind in this version. Whether that is anecdotal or what who knows..

..the main thing is cook that fish, so so much more sat.
