beamertomato Posted yesterday at 08:18 AM Report Posted yesterday at 08:18 AM Hey, just started playing and got a bit confused about one thing. Is it better to focus on building up one base first or spread out early? I tried both a bit but not sure what actually works better in the long run. How do you usually play it?
Rainbow Fresh Posted yesterday at 11:07 AM Report Posted yesterday at 11:07 AM I meandered around spawn for a bit trying to not starve to death for the first couple nights, then found a village ruin in some flat grassy field nearby, next to a big lake, and have been living there ever since. Ultimately though, it depends primarily on how you want to play and what mods you bring. I personally play with horses modded in which are earlier and easier to obtain than vanilla elks for longer travel with inventory capacity, so spreading out into multiple mini-bases might be more vanilla friendly. Otherwise living off of berries has been more than easy enough to fuel several days of just wandering around and then back home, so centering everything around one main base also works outside of winter, which is its very own challenge with either approach.
Zahariax Posted yesterday at 02:58 PM Report Posted yesterday at 02:58 PM As @Rainbow Fresh said, it depends based on your play style and possible mods, but it also depends on the location, i usually try to find a location with clay, peat, water and a forest nearby. I also think it's best practice to build some outposts around the world to simplify your long journeys with secure stops, and in doing so you can also lay the foundation to build future bases that give you some things that other bases can't, like warmer climates crops.

It depends entirely on preferred playstyle and game settings. In my case, I play roughly the Standard defaults, and spend the first day or two running around mapping the territory around spawn before picking a spot and settling down. I don't like to wander too far from spawn, since accidents do happen and that'll be a very long walk home/to get my stuff when a death does occur. For the longterm, I generally like to keep things consolidated to one base, as I like to pack a lot of details into my builds(when I can) and I also prefer to keep things in one general area. Plus it's nice to just have a little spot to call home.
