So I don't quite have an idea for a perfect solution, but one thing that I wish I could do more in the game, is go on long outdoor adventures. However usually the problem is that if you don't want to die at night you either need to be home by sundown or build yourself a quick dirt cube to sleep in, which kinda breaks the immersion of getting to sleep by a campfire in the open.

I wonder if this could be addressed by making the calm rift activity periods last longer and be more predictable. Like having some way to  get a weather forecast (maybe with some error bars) when the next calm period will start and how long it will last for. Or maybe tie it to temporal storms where after a storm it is guaranteed to be calm for, for example, 5-10 days before rift activity starts slowly picking up (on average) before culminating in a storm again.

The culmination of increasing rift activity leading to a storm (with variations still, so it can still be fluctuating between "low" to "apocalyptic" but the upper ceiling increases and eventually the lowest becomes not calm?) sounds like a great idea.
