Shoom Posted June 14 Report Posted June 14 I think fire is a kinda overlooked and often forgotten mechanic in the game, I know a lot of people play with fire spread off and I think in large part it is to how messy it leaves the terrain with scattered, floating blocks and such. What if fire got a complete overhaul? As of now, from my knowledge it behaves like it does and has done in Minecraft for a very long time, while it gets the job done I think it's a bit underwhelming. I think it could be interesting to discuss how it could potentially be overhauled/upgraded. Instead of outright deleting blocks I think it should leave charred variants and maybe some small piles of coal and maybe the visuals could be improved somehow. 4

My main beef is that when lightning burns down a forest, that spot is going to be forever barren unless I go and fix it myself. I'm not really sure how to let the areas regenerate though, without running into performance issues. 1

But if burnable blocks got replaced with a charred variant instead of deleted, at least the areas wouldn't appear barren and you'd be able to tell what happened and still harvest some material. I guess it would ultimately be up to the player to replant trees in the end if you decide to play with the option on. Maybe that's a fair compromise? Currently I think the main issue with fire is that it outright deletes blocks, I think replacing blocks with charred variants would be a lot better, that way you get a visual indicator as to what happened if you accidentally lit your house on fire and left, and then you could quite easily rebuild something affected by fire, just replace the burnt blocks rather than having to rebuild everything from scratch. I just think it's a shame most people seem to play with the mechanic off after their first mishap, I do think fire has a lot of potential as a mechanic and that it makes sense that it would be a concern, I mean it has been throughout the ages for people everywhere. But I also get that it could potentially be a lot of work for something most people might just turn off anyway. Would love to hear what others think? 2
Cedric the Silent Posted June 15 Report Posted June 15 Would be interesting if you start controlled cultural fires purposely to make farming fields with a bonus effect to the soil from the burning of the plant material releasing nutrients into said soil.
SIGILL Posted June 18 Report Posted June 18 I would love for fire to work a bit differently! I don't mind fire being destructive, as long as there are ways to control it that feel 'fair'. I think I play with fire spread setting on, but have disabled lightning being able to start fires because that feels 'unfair'; I don't know if lightning fires can happen outside view distance, but I've encountered multiple burned down areas that are just ugly and that ruin the entire region for me. The barren surface with the random floating blocks are off-putting and annoying to clear fully, and as far as I know impossible to restore because we can't grow the small bushes-like trees, and having (a chance at) grass regrowth requires replacing the top soil. And I just hate that it happened randomly, without me even noticing. I'm all for realism and hardcore settings in games, but that's because usually there are ways to mitigate the challenge and the punishment. I've accidentally burned down part of our farm, and later part of a forest.. they still were destructive, agressively spreading wildfires, but at least they were 'fun' and 'fair' because it was the result of my actions and I also could eventually stop them from spreading.. because I was there to see it was happening. If there were still charred tree remains standing I would like it much better already. It could feel like its own mini-biome even. I also think it would be cool if 'open' fire could be harnessed/utilized more clearly somehow. Now it feels like there are two categories of fire: accidental/wildfire fires that just destroy (remove) things, and 'controlled and functional fires' such as the firepit, pit kiln, torches.. ('domesticated fire')? And while I am also guilty of burning down the area around my shelter with my first pit kiln, I think these controlled fires feel *too* controlled and too safe. It doesn't feel like "playing with fire" like it does when starting a wildfire. Being able to somehow make use of the wildfire kind of fire would feel pretty cool though.. for example: On 6/15/2026 at 3:23 AM, Cedric the Silent said: Would be interesting if you start controlled cultural fires purposely to make farming fields with a bonus effect to the soil from the burning of the plant material releasing nutrients into said soil. This is one of the things I have on my (very long) list of ideas for mods to make, I would love this to be an official addition so I don't have to put in any work! ..oh, I mean I would love this to be an official addition, period!
