LadyWYT Posted June 18 Report Posted June 18 It's a very small thing, but player characters and human NPCs stare off into space and never blink. This ends up making them feel rather stiff and somewhat unsettling, especially when interacting with them for extended periods of time. These characters already have fidget animations and breathing animations, so letting them blink once in a while would definitely help give them more life. 3
ifoz Posted June 19 Report Posted June 19 Additionally, it'd be nice if NPC expressions could change based on dialogue, or upon making a successful trade. So many traders look depressed because the game decided to give them weary and sad expressions, even when making gears from the player. Player expressions could also be selectable via a menu or keybind, I think it's a bit strange there is no way to change your expression other than the .charsel command.

No matter what the date is, "customer service face" will always be a thing. 3 minutes ago, ifoz said: Player expressions could also be selectable via a menu or keybind, I think it's a bit strange there is no way to change your expression other than the .charsel command. Honestly, I don't really mind the static expressions. It helps depict the character's personality. However, I do think that the expression could change while the character is emoting. Gloomy characters can easily offer a brief smile when they're happy or excited; cheerful characters will absolutely cry when they're sad. Sick characters would look a little stressed. If there was an actual exhaustion mechanic, characters who go too long without sleeping would definitely look tired. There's also the reputation aspect. NPCs might be more reserved around characters they don't know very well or otherwise don't trust very much. Characters that are friends with NPCs or otherwise look like friendly sorts would be more likely to be greeted with smiles. 2

I mostly suggest it because of TOPS - playing over there, I originally had my expression set to 'grin', but an update then came out that swapped 'grin' and 'kind' around. To swap it back, I'd have to wait for the six-month .charsel allowance. I do think static expressions are nice for character personality, but maybe something like posture/stance could fill that place instead if expressions were made more versatile. Edited June 19 by ifoz

Posture/stance could be what determines which idle animations play and how often. Though idle animations are also fairly generic so I'm not quite sure how that would work.
