Background: I would like to settle near an ocean - but have had horrible luck finding any in several games. I finally turned to the /tp command to try and find out whether there's one nearby before investing hours of gameplay... but I don't want random explored spots on my world map.

  • Copying the file in the VintageStoryData/Saves folder to a backup location and replacing it afterwards still left the places I teleported to shown on my map
  • Copying the last-modified file from VintagestoryData/Maps to the backup location and replacing it afterwards... same deal. The map was still revealed in those locations after restoring the backup.

So what I'm asking is: where is the "these tiles are explored already" information stored? Can I roll map exploration state back without deleting the file in /Maps entirely and starting over? (which I'll do right now for new-new games so it won't hurt, but isn't a good option for older saves)

... and as secondary question: when I deleted the map file and loaded the game, the map was unexplored (as expected). When saving, a new map file was created (as expected). When I deleted the new map file and restored both savefile and map file from before... the map was still unexplored in the save. Is "map file X belongs to savegame Y" stored separately somewhere, and the game is now looking for the new one?

Not what you asked, but a different approach.

If this is a NEW world, then (A) copy the world seed (B) Save the world configuration (C) make a new world with BOTH of those settings.

I think you should find the water in the same place, and there will be no map markings.

Otherwise, I'm sure we can work out the answer to your original question . . . although you seem to be hitting the right areas(?).
