Question about joining multiplayer and mods

Howdy folks :) I've been playing single player VS for a few years now, but have never made the jump into multiplayer. I'm an awkward hermit with social anxiety. I mostly enjoy trying new mods for new experiences, but recently have had thoughts of trying the official server or maybe finding some friendly folks to play with.

Anyhoo, my question is: If I have mods on my private VS game, before joining a server, do I need to disable those mods first? Or are they auto disabled?

Question 2: if I join a server that has mods, how is that handled? Are they automatically added? Do I need to download a mod pack?

Sorry if this has already been answered somewhere, and thank you for clarification.

You do not need to disable mods on your side, the game will keep catalogued mods for any and all multiplayer servers you join in their own folders separate from your personal, local mods.

Any time you join a server, you will be prompted to download the mods for that server and they will automatically be installed in their own partition within the modding folders of Vintage Story! Makes things very easy and allows mostly-painless server hopping.

Thank you! That's a relief. I was afraid I'd have to juggle a bunch of options, maybe even separate installs, and remember to turn my stuff off and on again.

This is why I suspect the download numbers on ModDB are probably way high relative to actual users. If you bounce around a few servers deciding which you like, you may download some mods several many times.

Yeah. It's actually not a bad idea to go back and clean up your mod folders for servers you don't play after a while because they will sit there and take up space as a result, but I'd say it's still a better solution than having to juggle third party launchers and modpacks like Minecraft.
