Game version specific world generation options as to carry on into future game versions. (aids in forever worlds)

There has to be a way that they can let you select what vanilla height map generation you want your game to render in. This way we dont HAVE to start out a new world and not be able to avoid the sheer landform generation that will occur where newly discovered land now generates. Some of us have world generation mods that are tied to vanilla land gen. Selecting 1.22 generation while upgrading to 1.23 will help us to keep generation consistent into the future. Everyone loves persistent worlds. Then all the new blocks and flora can generate atop the new terrain, and we wont have to miss any new content. I hate broken worlds.

  • Any significant additions or overhauls by necessity have to be toggleable - that is your guarantee that worlds updated to newer stable versions don't generally break.
  • Any smaller changes or discontinuities should be covered by terrain smoothing.
  • In edge cases, you may also be able to use commands to prune the world or regenerate parts of it (like described here, for example) - granted, I've not verified whether they can apply smoothing properly, though pruning at least should.

Beyond that, I do not see the point. What changes do you expect in 1.23 that wouldn't be covered by any of the above and break your world? A full large-scale worldgen update would be cool and is not off the table for the future, but 1.23 is unlikely to even have rivers, so it doesn't seem to me that it warrants any concerns about updating based on what we know so far.

I hate to be that guy, but...mods are optional community content, and while the devs do their best to avoid breaking mods, they're also under no obligation to ensure that a game update won't break a modded world. That's always been one of the risks of using mods.

Mods aside, I don't really see much purpose in what's been suggested. Chunk smoothing is already a thing, and should help prevent jarring transitions between old generation and new. Plus as I see it, allowing worlds to continue playing by "old version generation" rules is just asking for code bloat(because you'd still have to have those rules in the game files, in addition to new rules), on top of other various things across the game breaking because the old rules can't properly account for new content.
