  1. Farseer and named trunks!
  2. I had a REALLY hard time finding clay initially. I had to explore quite far and wide to find it. All my attempts at looking at the map or top of soil to find it were futile. The way I found it has always been on the side of small hills - basically you will be able to spot smooth looking, red/pink colour of the soil. I also noticed that some areas can have quite a lot, while other areas have very little. Pretty sure you want areas with plenty of rain and some water + grasslands. I have never found any in rocky terrain or high elevations. Explore ~800 blocks in each direction and switch up your paths. You'll stumble upon a deposit eventually! Consider not sprinting, but walking as well - it'll help! 100 game hours in, I'm yet to spot any blue or fire clay. Only red.
  3. Hi everybody! I jumped on last night and got some severe stuttering and freezing of the game. Long story short - Windows updates are to blame. Even though I had the "game mode" switched on, Windows was dead set of installing updates right then and there. TL;DR: if you are getting sudden stuttering and freezing, chances are it's Windows updates. Quit the game and let the updates complete. You can see relevant services being active and using up system resources in Task Manager. Just thought I'd share!

  4. Amazing info guys! Thanks so much for such detailed responses! I barely managed to survive the winter - eating lots of bushmeat and anything else I could get my hands on by the end. My food stocks just managed to last until proper spring kicked off and I could forage once again. Caves and wild animals really freak me out, so I took your advice and started avoiding caves if I can help it and also building roads in the main directions in which I explore. Travelling on those is safe and extremely quick, so the effort in building said roads ends up being mostly worth it I think! I also finally was able to find Zinc and Bismuth, so I finally have bronze tools, which will hopefully start me off on the path to Iron! Thanks to exploration and also kicking off a bee colony nearby, I was able to get some more lanterns built and lit up my base quite a bit better. Funnily enough, I get more monsters spawning inside my main building than outside now. I do believe that it's because of the abovementioned oil lamp issue and lots of empty interior space. I might have to bite the bullet and get some lamps indoors as well, although I do prefer the ambience of the oil lamps to be honest! It's a pretty amazing game I have to say. So many things to do and so much exploring. I got the Farseer mod from ModDB, which makes exploring much more scenic and pleasant too. All that being said, it's pretty unforgiving. Even with leather armor and bronze weapons, getting jumped by a single wolf could be deadly. Same goes with running blind through a heavily forested area and falling down a mineshaft. It hasn't happened to me yet, but I assume it will. I'm not looking forward to losing all of my gear, amour, etc in the process.
  5. That actually looks great! You could plant some plants around, maybe add some creeping vines? Change up the brick texture in places?
  6. Hi all, Newbie player here. 60 hours into the game and am just coming out of my first winter (it's mid March). Few questions: What's a normal winter duration? It's my first game with default settings and it's been snowing for close to 6 months. Basically 6 months with short days and no crops. It's pretty rough! Just barely hanging on, especially that I made some agricultural mistakes before Is there a way to prevent mobs from spawning inside the base? I've got LOTS of light everywhere, but they still sometimes spawn inside my base when there's lots of rift activity, which is crappy. A few times they would spawn right in front of me, which was deeply unsettling. Is there a trick to spotting animals? It's really hard to see wolves and bears among all the vegetation or snow and half the time they end up getting a jump on me and attack me from behind, without a sound, which is super scary and also hard to survive Lastly - how do you deal with caves? I've got some natural fear of caves and combined with randomly spawning mobs, it makes for a HORRIFYING experience. I know that's where all the good stuff is, but I find myself dreading going inside Some screenshots of my base for refence: Thanks!
  7. Eclipse is the correct answer I believe. It happened to be as well, although no devil. Bears, wolves and hostile mods do continue to haunt me though!
  8. I also had a LOT of trouble finding clay. I was only able to find it on the side of small hills - never on the ground so far, although I search thousands of blocks in each direction. I found so much peat and other types of soil, but alas, no clay. I recommend looking at the sides of hills, but it's quite time consuming and once my current deposit runs out, I'll be right back to looking for another one! Good luck!!
  9. Great idea!!
  10. I wanted to update this, in case it helps anyone. I ended up rebuilding whole chunks of my house and I think what this issue boiled down was the fact that my "room" was too large. My whole house was basically one room, with different floors, but without trapdoors or doors separating them. As such, it was around 12-18 blocks tall, depending on how you count and maybe 12-25 blocks long and wide, depending on the floor. Once I cut each floor off from the other floor with a trap door or a door, the issue seemed to go away. I also learned that you can place two doors side by side to make a double door, that functions as a single set of doors. Opening those creates a much more open "feel" and still provides separation needed for correct room calculation. Hope this helps somebody! I'll update this with any other findings!
  11. That's not a path! That's a highway! Amazing haha!
  12. Fantastic tips and thanks for sharing! I'm a road beginner - only just creating 500 or so road tiles. I do definitely see the massive benefit in speed and convenience due to mostly event grade + steps, which REALLY speed up traversal. I also started chopping down trees around the roads as having wolves or bears jump me out from behind a tree is no fun!
  13. Hi all, Currently trying to survive through my first winter and realized that my baseline hunger level is high. Long story short, I went on insulation mission, which included: Getting rid of all water sources in the house Separating floors with doors and trap doors Redoing the thatch roof, by creating a "ceiling" of blocks and making sure that there are no more corner block joints What I found weird are two things: At some point, replacing a single slab (which served as a ceiling) with a block finally created a "room" At this point I was curious if adding a water source back in will ruin it - added the water - lost the "room", however when I removed the water again - the "room" was no longer being detected again. Nothing else changed - just adding and removing water. This makes me think there are some issues with "rooms" as they are right now. It's quite non-obvious on what's wrong and how to fix it. The only workaround is making small rooms (which is a shame, since it discourages setting up large halls) with doors and traps doors separating them, which helps in isolating the "drafts".
  14. Hi all, Just wondering how everyone builds their stone paths. I've used paths before (entire block), but those are pretty resource intensive. I've experimented with slabs (half block), however those look a bit weird on top of the landscape and also weird if dug in. How do you build your paths?
  15. Definitely! Just need to survive long enough to use them and be able to spot the wildlife in between all the tall grass and bushes, which is INCREDIBLY hard, especially when they don't really make any noise, which is proper nightmare fuel!
